In Las Vegas, the Golden Knights held leads of 3-1 and 4-2 on Sunday, and still managed blow both of them in a 5-4 loss on skills to the San Jose Sharks.
Despite the loss, the Nights still picked up a much needed point.,
The Sharks tied the game to force extra time when Timo Meier scored with less than hone second left on the clock.
“It’s a great story for us and I know I’ve never seen the room as happy and as joyful,” San Jose coach Bob Boughner said. “Obviously we’re disappointed not to be in the playoffs, but I’m most proud that these guys are really fighting hard for each other right to the end. As a coach, it’s all you can ask.”
Thomas Bordeleau, had the only goal in the skills competition and was credited with the winner for San Jose.
“I’m just comfortable with [the move]. I’ve been doing it a lot,” Bordeleau said. “Only goalie that can stop it in the past couple of years was [Michigan goalie Erik] Portillo … So I just tried it out, and it worked.”
James Reimer made 42 saves in the San Jose win.
Vegas dropped to 42-31-6.
“Definitely a tough pill to swallow,” Vegas’ Mark Stone said. “We have to win the next game [Tuesday at the Stars]. If we win the next game, you never know what could happen. You can get some help. We’ve gotten some along the way. Really a devastating loss, but we’re still in it. You have to think that way. We have to win a big game on Tuesday to keep our chances alive.”
The Sharks improved to 32-35-12.
Tomas Hertl gave the Sharks an early 1-0 lead.
Vegas replied with goals from Chandler Stephenson, Max Pacioretty, and William Carrier for the 3-1 lead.
San Jose’s Nick Bonino scored the first of his two on the night to make it 3-2.
“I really like the feel [of the fourth line],” Vegas coach Peter DeBoer said. “I love what they brought. Their physicality and how they got on the forecheck. It was a glimpse of what we were waiting for.”
Nicolas Roy pushed the Vegas advantage back to to two at 4-2.
Bonino got the Sharks back within one at 4-3, before the late heroics.
Logan Thompson made 25 saves in the Vegas loss.
