In Las Vegas, the Golden Knights broke out of a funk on Saturday night with a 5-2 win over the visiting New York Islanders.
Jack Eichel and Nicolas Roy both hit for doubles in the win.
“They take the risk out of the game. They’re not usually a team that makes a lot of turnovers. They play pretty simple in the D zone. They easily clogged the net front and try to keep everything on the outside a little bit, the same as we do,” Roy said. “In the neutral zone, they don’t take that many risks. They play good hockey there, too. So, it’s a tough matchup.”
Logan Thompson made 28 saves in the win.
Vegas improved to 23-12-5 after losing six of their seven fixtures.
Eichel hit for his first of the night at 6:25 of the opening stanza for a 1-0 lead.
“There were some good things to like about our offensive-zone game,” Eichel said. “It was a good response by the group.”
Mathew Barzal and Matt Martin were the Islanders strikers.
Barzal tied it 1-1, at 11:13, the game stayed the way headed to the middle frame.
The Isles dropped to 18-11-10.
“We were good, and a couple of mistakes and it turned fast,” New York coach Lane Lambert said. “For about two and a half, three minutes, I thought it was our most solid game of the trip.”
In the middle frame, the Knights potted two goals to take a 3-1 lead into the third period.
Pavel Dorofeyev restored the lead, 2-1, for Vegas at 17:11 of the middle frame..
Roy collected his first of the night at 18:41 of the second for a 3-1 advantage headed to the third. A challenge to the goal, for goalie interference, was overturned and the goal was good.
“It was the right call for us to challenge that,” Lambert said.
Eichel’s double came 31 seconds into the third for a 4-1 advantage to Vegas.
“The first three goals were all a mindset we had going into the game that we practiced yesterday about putting pucks behind and playing below the goal line,” Vegas coach Bruce Cassidy said. “Every one one of our goals, we were forcing a breakout and executed well and we got pucks back. … We stuck to our gameplan.”
The Islanders’ scored at 2:42 to trim the4 deficit to 4-2, but Roy hit for his double at 4:20 for the 5-2 final count.
“We played a pretty good game overall,” Martin said. “We just let it slip away in the second.”
Ilya Sorokin made 24 saves in the loss.
