Vay, Mallards shut out Nailers

WHEELING, WV – Adam Vay made 22 saves and Donnie Harris and Brady Brassart scored key second period goals just over a minute apart as the Quad City Mallards (33-22-3) shut out the host Wheeling Nailers (28-24-6) 3-0 Friday night.

Harris’ wrist shot from the right wing boards doubled what had been a 1-0 Mallard lead at 13:11 of the second. 76 seconds later, Brassart’s tip-in stretched the gap to 3-0.

Nolan LaPorte had opened the scoring by burying Michael Parks’ centering pass with just 8.3 seconds left in the first period.

Vay was required to make no more than eight saves in any period as the Mallards limited Wheeling scoring chances throughout the evening

The Mallards and Nailers meet again Saturday night in Wheeling. The Mallards next play on home ice next Wednesday night against the Kalamazoo Wings. That game and all Mallards Wednesday night home games face off at the special early start time of 6:35 p.m.
