In Boston Monday afternoon, Semyon Varlamov made 29 saves to help the Colorado Avalanche shutout the Bruins, 4-0.
Four games does not a season make but the Avs are playing well on their current road trip, certainly better than most of last season.
The much-maligned Nail Yakupov scored twice for the Avs in the win as they pushed their road record to open season to 2-1-1.
“It’s a good start for me. I didn’t play for a long time,” Varlamov said. “Came back and started the season with two wins. It brings confidence to the team. I thought today we played a very solid game.”
Sven Andrighetto and J.T. Compher also had strikes for the Avs.
“I think we are fortunate to be [2-1-0]. In Game 1 we relied on our goalie too much. Game 2, our goalie was great too but we didn’t get enough offensive production,” Avalanche coach Jared Bednar said after the win. ” But our best game of the road trip was certainly our third. So, to be [2-1-0] and come in to Boston and play a good team, and to be able to get a good solid win, it’s a little bit of a sign of maturity growth for our team.”
Colorado had the Bruins on their heels most of the early contest and that took Boston out of their scheme and seemed to end any suspense in the game.
“Yeah, from the first shift everything went the wrong way. But those games happen. The season is long, obviously, and obviously we have to be better. We have to learn what we did wrong and how we can do better the next time,” Boston’s David Pastrnak said after the loss.

Tuukka Rask made 19 saves in taking the loss.
“We had plenty of time to get back in the game,” coach Bruce Cassidy said. “The core group that we rely on just wasn’t a good effort, young, old, in between. And clearly put myself in that category. We’re supposed to be ready to play at home, especially after a couple days off. So that was the biggest disappointment for me.”
