In Detroit, Colorado’s Semyon Varlamov made 24 saves to register a 2-0 shutout over the Red Wings, Sunday.
Varlamov made a goal from Nathan MacKinnon stand up until Gabriel Landeskog potted an empty-net goal to seal.
“We knew they were really going to make a push in the third period, but our defense did a great job,” Varlamov said. “They were playing really smart hockey and taking away all of Detroit’s speed.”
The Avalanche have points in 11 straight games with a 9-0-2 record.
“We’re playing really well now and we feel like we’re giving ourselves a chance to win every game,” defenseman Ian Cole said. “I thought we did a really good job of limiting their chances tonight and when they got one, [Varlamov] took care of them.”
The Avs improved to 16-6-5.
“We came out really sluggish in the first period; we looked like the team that played and traveled last night, but [Varlamov] kept us in the game,” Avalanche coach Jared Bednar said. “We really flipped the script going into the second period and I liked the way we played from there.”
Detroit dropped to 12-12-3.
“We were a little shorthanded there because we only dressed 11 forwards and lost three of them,” Red Wings head coach Jeff Blashill said. “But the concussion protocol is there to protect the safety of the players, so you can’t complain about them checking on [Larkin].”

Jonathan Bernier made 27 saves in the loss.
“They got one goal on the power play and one in the empty net, but I thought we did a good job against them when it was even strength. That’s good to see because we’ve got some great teams with hot lines coming up on our schedule, starting with Tampa Bay in a couple days,” Blashill said.
