In Vancouver Thursday night, the Canucks scored three third period goals to to take control of an otherwise tight match in a 5-2 win over the Chicago Blackhawks.
Thomas Vanek struck twice and added three assists in the win.
Vanek had a goal stolen from him early in the first period.
“After that [paddle save] I was like, ‘Ah, it’s going to be a long night,’ ” Vanek said. “I thought early on it was going to be one of those nights where it goes the other way. I had some good chances early and he made some great saves. As a line, we stuck with it. We kept talking on the bench and just created.”
Brock Boeser scored for Vancouver and Sam Gagner added two of his own in the win.
“It’s one win for us, which is important, and one big night for our line. But we need to win a lot more games. Hopefully we can keep our momentum going here,” Vanek said after the game.
Jacob Markstrom made 30 saves to pick up the win as the Canucks improved to 16-17-5.
Nick Schmaltz and Ryan Hartman scored for the Blackhawks.
“We scored a nice power-play goal and then we lost momentum in the game with our ineffectiveness in the second period on a string of power plays,” Hawks head coach Joel Quenneville said. “It slows us down.”
Quenneville was not happy after the loss and the soft defense his club played.
“Pucks going through us down low like Swiss cheese,” Quenneville said. “It was too easy.”
Chicago dropped to 17-14-5 with the loss.
