USHL players of week 19

The United States Hockey League announced the CCM Forwards, Defenseman and Goaltender of the Week for Week 19 of the 2015-16 season. Highly touted prospect Kieffer Bellows earned his second weekly award this season after scoring back-to-back game-winning goals, while Waterloo’s Liam Pecararo turned in a big three-game weekend. Mattias Goransson and Peyton Jones picked up their third weekly honors of the season as they continue to lead the league at their respective positions. Co-Forward: Kieffer Bellows – Team USA 2 GP: 4 goals, 2 assists, +3 rating

Bellows extended his goal scoring streak to four games after netting two goals in back-to-back nights. In total, Bellows factored in on six of Team USA’s seven goals over the weekend. Bellows also scored both game-winning goals for Team USA, his fourth and fifth this season. In 17 games, the 2015 USHL Rookie of the Year has 14 goals and 27 points. The Boston University commit has scored two points or more in seven games, or just over 40% of games played this season. Bellows previously played for the Sioux Falls Stampede (USHL) and Edina High School (USHS) prior to joining Team USA earlier this season. Bellows has won a championship in each of the past two seasons with the Stampede and the Hornets.

Co-Forward: Liam Pecararo – Waterloo Black Hawks 3 GP: 3 goals, 4 assists, +7

Pecararo extended his point streak to four games over the weekend, scoring a combined seven points over three consecutive days. Waterloo was a perfect 3-0-0-0 in those games.  The recently committed Northeastern University recruit has 25 points in 23 games, including seven multi-point games. The Canton, MA native has bolstered Waterloo’s offense since his return, as the Black Hawks are currently tied for the most goals scored in the Western Conference. Pecararo previously played for the University of Maine (NCAA) and Boston Advantage (T1EHL). Pecararo was a 2012 USHL Phase I Draft pick of the Waterloo Black Hawks in the 1st round, 2nd overall.

Defenseman: Mattias Goransson – Tri-City Storm 2 GP: 0 goals, 4 assists, +1 rating

Goransson took control of the USHL defensemen scoring lead after dishing out three assists Friday night, his ninth multi-point game this season. With an additional assist Saturday, Goransson leads all defensemen in scoring with 29 points in 38 games. His 22 assists and 14 points on the power play also leads all blue liners. The Grums, SWE native is +13 on the season and is second in team scoring for Tri-City. After the weekend, Goransson and the Storm find themselves in second place in the Western Conference. The University of Massachusetts-Lowell committed defenseman is in his second USHL season after playing for Brynäs (U20 SEL) in Sweden.

Goaltender: Peyton Jones – Lincoln Stars 2-0-0-0, 1.50 GAA, .951 SV%

Jones extended his starting win streak to four games over the weekend after back-to-back wins. Jones is 4-0-0-0 with a 1.00 GAA and .967 SV% during his streak. After stopping 28 of 29 shots Friday night, Jones shut the door on a surging Madison squad with 30 saves Saturday. The Langhorne, PA native has gotten Lincoln back on track to first place in the Western Conference. Jones ranks first in shutouts (4), second in save percentage (.924), fourth in GAA (2.35) and seventh in wins (12) among USHL goaltenders. The Penn State University commits previously played for the Philadelphia Jr. Flyers (T1EHL), New Jersey Rockets (AYHL) and Holy Ghost Prep (USHS) prior to being selected by the Lincoln Stars in the 2014 USHL Phase II Draft in the 4th round, 62nd overall.
