Towson Tigers take Crab Pot trophy from host Navy

In the 40th edition of the Crab Pot Tournament hosted by the Navy Midshipmen, it was the Towson Tigers defeating the Midshipmen in another tight battle of in state rivals, five to four.

Towson jumped out to a two goal lead in the first period with two short handed goals by Ryan Dieter at 6:09 and 13:38 respectively. Assists  were given to Michael Darosa on the first goal and Jeremy Snyder on the second. Navy was finally able to get on the board with a power play goal by Matthew Stamler, from Luke Turk with 4:32 remaining in the period. With 2:23 remaining in the first, Dieter completed a hat trick on the only even strength goal of the period. Darosa got his second assist along with Ian Dykstra providing the second helper.

In period two, it was the Midshipmen who got hit with the penalty bug, taking six of the eight penalties called. Towson increased the lead at 3:36 on yet another goal by Dieter. Travis Reece got the lone assist on the goal. Less than one minute later, at 4:43, it was Towson’s Snyder scoring on a power play goal assisted by teammates Mark Stella and Nicholas Vonakis. Navy finally stopped the bleeding with 12.2 seconds left on the clock on an unassisted short handed goal by John Linenger.

At 16:23 of the third period,it was Navy’s Stamler cutting into the Tigers lead with an assist from Hyo Jun Baek. Navy was able to make the game really interesting with Linenger’s second goal of the game with 1:27 remaining. Matthew Harrigan and Stamler assisted on the final goal of the game.

Towson’s goalie Bryan Canter made 28 saves on 32 shots. Navy’s James OHalloran made 12 saves on 15 shots in the first period. Luke Markus took over in goal for the Midshipmen in the second and third periods, stopping 27 of 29 shots faced.

Next up for Towson and Navy is the ECHA playoffs. The ECHA is a division of the ACHA.
