Annapolis, MD. The Towson Tigers were able to get out of McMullen Ice Arena, home of the United States Naval Academy Midshipmen with a shootout victory on Friday night.
The first period was evenly contested with goalies Luke Markus of Navy making 10 saves, while Towson’s Bryan Canter made 11 saves. With just over a minute left in the period, Navy had a goal wiped off the scoreboard due to an offsides call. After the ensuing face off, Towson carried the puck into the Navy zone and almost scored ringing a shot of the pipes.
The second period belonged to the special teams in a penalty filled period. Navy was called for three minor penalties, while Towson was called for three minors, two 10 minute misconduct, and a game misconduct. Navy got on the board first with a power play goal at 8:40, scored by Derek Golembrosky assisted by Jake Rotzler. At 7:48, Towson evened it up with a power play goal scored by Matt Curtin assisted by Travis Reece and Ryan Dieter. Navy ended the scoring in the second period with a short handed goal by Luke Turk.
Towson goalie Jacob Snyder, who had entered the game midway through the second period, shut out Navy’s offense in the third. The only goal scored in the period was a power play goal scored by Travis Reece with an assist from Matt Stella.
Neither team could score during a five minute three on three overtime period. The ensuing shootout went five rounds with Towson’s Matt Stella scoring the deciding goal. Also scoring in the shootout were Navy’s Alexander Vandenberg and Towson’s Travis Reece.
Navy continues the weekend with home games Saturday and Sunday versus William Patterson University, while Towson returns home for a date against Drexel University.
