Tough weekend for Checkers

CHARLOTTE, NC – On Friday evening October 7, the Checkers traveled to Norfolk, VA, to face the Admirals. It was a hectic week of training, combined with Husqvarna’s 15 Days of Giving, and the finalization of a 22-man roster.

General Manager and Head Coach, Jeff Daniels announced that Brett Sutter has been named team captain, Nicolas Blanchard and Chris Durno are alternates. In other major changes Mike Mckenzie and Justin Shugg have been assigned to the Checkers’ ECHL affiliate, the Florida Everblades. Riley Nash has been assigned from the Carolina Hurricanes. Nash played in 79 games last season, scoring 14 goals and 32 points.

In the first game of the season the Checkers gave up two leads of two goals to eventually lose the game 6-5. Jon Matsumoto led the scoring with three goals, Jerome Samson netted two more, and Zach Boychuk rounded out the scoring. This overtime loss also means that Norfolk takes a 1-0 lead in the GEICO Challenge Cup, which will be awarded to the team that finishes with the most points in the eight game series.

The 15 Days of Giving mean that Checkers players and staff give back to the community by donating their time for events, drives and volunteer work. Visits to the Humane Society, Presbyterian and Justin Mychals Hospitals and delivering Friendship Trays to the elderly, are just a few of the things Checkers undertake.

Saturday evening was a similar result as to the Friday game, with the Admirals coming out on top 4-3. This win puts Norfolk ahead by three points in the GEICO Challenge Cup.

Drayson Bowman scored two goals and Mathieu Roy; a former Admiral player, scored one for the Checkers. Jon Matsumato had three assists for Charlotte giving him back-to-back, 3- point games for the first time in his AHL career.

With the score tied 3-3 at the end of the second period it took the Admirals only six minutes into the third period to put their noses ahead again. Norfolk’s Carter Ashton won the puck on an offensive zone faceoff and backhanded it to Cory Conacher who added the finishing touch.

The Checkers return to Time Warner Cable Arena on October 15 for the opening night match with Peoria. The first 3,500 fans will receive a Checkers house flag courtesy of Time Warner Cable. The first 7,000 fans will receive a magnet schedule from Presbyterian Hospital. Face-off is at 7 p.m.
