In Washington, DC, Rasmus Sandin hit for the game-winner on Monday night as the Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the Capitals, 5-3.
The Maple Leafs held a 3-1 lead until Tom Wilson scored in the middle frame and early in the third period to get the Caps even, 3-3.
“I think [Tavares] works really hard to get the puck back and makes a terrific pass out to ‘Hollsy’ first,” Sandin said. “I didn’t think he saw me, but he did. So I was very happy with that. I got a missile right on my tape and I just tried to get it in.”
Pierre Engvall scored an empty-net gal to ice the win for Toronto.
Petr Mrazek made 30 saves in the Toronto win.
“I liked the game,” Toronto coach Sheldon Keefe said. ‘I thought we were good in a lot of areas, except the power play (0-for-4). Otherwise, I thought the guys did a good job.”
The Maple Leafs moved to 35-14-4.
Washington has lost three straight and six in a row at home.
“There’s frustration. I think you’re probably angry more than anything else,” Caps coach Peter Laviolette said. “It’s our building and we’re not getting it done. Something’s got to be better.”
The Capitals dropped to 28-18-9.
Michael Bunting and William Nylander also scored for the Maple Leafs.
Conor Sheary added a single marker for Washington.
Ilya Samsonov made seven saves and yielded three goals through two periods of play, he was given the hook in the second intermission.
Vitek Vanecek made 16 saves in the third period.
