Toronto pushes on with win in Calgary

In Calgary, the visiting Toronto Maple Leafs flexed their muscles again and skated off with a 4-3 win over the Flames on Tuesday night.

Toronto’s Mitchell Marner scored just past the midway point of the third period to break a 3-3 tie.

Auston Matthews had a goal in the Leafs win.

“I’ve really been working on that shot with [Matthews],” Marner said. “I think if I can try to find that spot more, I know [Matthews] can find me there. For me, it was just trying to get it off my stick quickly and on to the net for a chance on net for a rebound or something to go in, which it did. I’m trying to get more [of] a shot mentality in there, trying to be more of a threat, and it was a great dish by [Matthews] and it was a big goal.”

Frederik Andersen made 23 saves for the win.

“It’s good character to battle these games out and get the two points,” Andersen said. “We had a chance to take all four [points] today in this little mini-series, and we wanted to do that. It was really nice to see the way we battled until the end and got away with the two points again. … You never want to make it this hard every night, but it’s a good character win.”

Johnny Gaudreau scored twice for the Flames.

The Flames had one shot on goal in the first period.

“The first period was awful,” Gaudreau said. “We just didn’t show up in the first. We’re not going to win games that way. [We] played catch-up the whole game. We got a lot better in the second and third, but that was just an awful first period.”

Wayne Simmonds and Travis Boyd also scored for Toronto.

Milan Lucic had a single marker for Calgary. Jacob Markstrom made 17 saves in the loss.

“Every game’s a divisional game now so everything matters, so it’s tough coming out with nothing in these two games,” Calgary’ Milan Lucic said.
