t may not have been their prettiest effort of the year, but the Ottawa 67’s came away with a 6-3 road win over the Kingston Frontenacs, Wednesday night.
Cam Tolnai scored a pair, as a part of a three-point effort, with Will Gerrior, Vinzenz Rohrer, Luca Pinelli, and Cooper Foster also finding the twine. Max Donoso made 25 saves, as the Barber Poles improved to 13-1-0 with their fourth consecutive victory.
The Barber Poles struck first, just 4:27 into the game. Anthony Costantini broke up a Kingston breakout attempt, and the loose puck wound up on the stick of Gerrior. The local product uncorked a bullet of a wrist shot, and made no mistake for his first of the season.
Owen Outwater knotted things up for the Frontenacs at the 12:35 mark of the frame, and despite being outshot 13-4, the 67’s headed to the second period in a 1-1 tie.
Ottawa found another early goal to start the middle frame, when a shot by Rohrer from the top of the circle found its way through Ivan Zhigalov, and the Montreal Canadiens prospect’s eighth of the campaign made it 2-1 in favour of the 67’s.
Outwater’s second of the night knotted things up again, though, just over six minutes later, but the 67’s found an answer on their league-best powerplay. On the man advantage, Tolnai fed Brady Stonehouse, who found Pinelli, and the 2023 NHL Draft prospect rifled a high shot home for Ottawa’s third lead of the game.
Unfortunately for the Barber Poles, the trend of early goals continued in the third, when a shot from the corner by Linus Hemström banked off of Donoso’s pad and in, evening the score at 3-3.
The 67’s firepower would put to rest any notion of an upset defeat, from there. On the powerplay once again, Tolnai cashed in on a rebound chance, and Foster tipped his fifth of the year past Zhigalov not long after.
Donoso closed the door on the Fronts as time wound down, and Tolnai put his second of the game into an empty net, as Ottawa won their fourth straight, by a final score of 6-3.
The 67’s are back in action on Friday, hosting the Oshawa Generals inside The Arena at TD Place at 7:00pm ET.
