Toledo takes shootout win over Cincinnati

CINCINNATI, Ohio – Jeff Lerg posted 30 saves to lead the Walleye to a 2-1 shootout win in Cincinnati Wednesday night. Toledo has an overall record of 4-2-0-1 and is 4-2-0-1 on the road.

A scoreless first period saw both teams exchange chances with Cincinnati out shooting Toledo 10-7. Shane Berschbach (3rd) tipped a blue line shot from Beau Schmitz to give the Walleye a 1-0 lead at 2:30 of the second period. Toledo carried the play in the second period with a 10-6 shot advantage.

In the third period, Cincinnati struck early with the tying goal just 42 seconds in. The game went into overtime with each team eyeing a win but the goaltenders stood tall to force a shootout. Kyle Bonis scored and AJ Jenks went along the ice to beat Brad Thiessen for the winner.

Walleye Notes: Goaltender Jeff Lerg stopped 30 of the 31 shots (two of two in the shootout) he faced and his record is 3-0-1 on the season. Berschbach has scored goals in back to back games (3 total).
