TOLEDO, OH – A back-and-forth contest at the Huntington Center on Tuesday night saw the Toledo Walleye come out victorious against Wheeling by a score of 4-3. Toledo is now 22-4-0-1 on the season and 9-1-0-1 at home. Jake Paterson got the nod for the home team in net and stopped 31 of the 34 shots he faced to move his record to 12-3-0-1 on the year.
Evan Rankin got the offense going for the Walleye when he snuck one past Wheeling netminder Doug Carr at 6:03 of the first period for his 12th goal of the season. On the assists were Tylor Spink and Scott Czarnowczan. Jake Paterson saw 16 shots come his way in the first, stopping each of them.
Wheeling tied it up at 1:56 of the second period on the tenth goal of the year by Garrett Meurs. The Walleye retook the lead at 5:42 of the second on a power play goal from Alden Hirschfeld, his eighth of the season. Czarnowczan was credited with his second assist of the night, along with A.J. Jenks. Wheeling tied it up again at 6:18 of the second on eighth goal of the year by Nick Sorkin, and then took the lead at 9:58 of the frame when Christian Hilbrich scored his fourth of the season. The back-and-forth contest continued a minute later when a slap shot off the stick of Simon Denis was tipped in by Hirschfeld, tying the game back up at 3 with his ninth of the year. Shane Berschbach put the home team back in front for good, 4-3, at 15:57 of the second on a feed from Jenks. The score was Berschbach’s sixth of the season.
Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the third period.
Toledo converted two of its five power plays and killed off five of Wheeling’s six man advantages.
