In Elmont the Islanders gave away another win on Saturday afternoon, this time a 4-3 loss to the Ottawa Senators in extra time.

Bo Horvat  scored with 38 seconds left in regulation to tie the game, 3-3, and force extra time.

In the extra session, Horvat was called on a minor penalty, and Brady Tkachuk hit of f the ensuing power play for the win, and a hat trick.

“Great pass. It probably feels good for [Pinto], playing in front of his family and friends here,” Tkachuk said. “It was a great comeback for our team. We’ll take it and build on it for tomorrow. It just feels good to get the overtime over with and get ready for the back-to-back.”

Tkachuk scored with 32 seconds left in the extra session.

“We just gave that game away, that’s all we did,” Islanders coach Patrick Roy said. “I mean, come on. We are better than this. We have to be better than this. We did a lot of good things, but it’s not enough at this time of the year if we want to win those big games, and that was a big game for us.”

The Senators moved to 28-33-4.

“It’s good experience; it shows you have to stick with it and be composed and go right to the end,” Ottawa coach Jacques Martin said. “It’s nice to win those games because it’s rewarding to get that extra point. I thought we had some good moments. At times, we made some mistakes. I thought we had a pretty good second period. That one goal [in the second] was a mistake by us, but I thought overall we competed hard.”

The Islanders took a 1-0 lead on a marker form Matt Martin  at 4:27 of the opening stanza, scoring off a wraparound.

Tkachuk potted his double at 11:46 of the middle frame, scoring off a wrister from the left circle.

The Islaes recaptured the lead at 16:22 on a goal from Kyle, scoring after a scramble for a loose puck.

“I think the first half of the game, for whatever reason, we just weren’t generating a lot,” Palmieri said. “[We were] passing shots up and maybe looking for that extra pass. As a team, all four lines really in order for us to be successful and play at our best, we’re playing fast and moving the puck up ice and getting it to those areas and putting shots on the net.”

New York dropped to 29-22-15 off their third straight loss.

Ottawa knotted the game, 2-2, on a strike by Ridly Greig at 6:35 of the third period, scoring off an odd man jail break.

Tkachuk collected his double at 12:14, scoring off the power play for a 3-2 lead to the Sens.

Semyon Varlamov made 26 saves in the loss.

“I thought we had good composure throughout the game,” the Isles’ Shane Pinto said. “A couple of things didn’t go our way, especially at the end there with the penalty, but we stuck with it and got the job done. So, that’s all that matters.

“… When you win a few games, you start feeling good and the confidence starts to get going a little bit. We’ve got a big game tomorrow, and hopefully we can keep the confidence going.”
