Tigers NIHL finish with win over Sheffield

Telford Tigers NIHL signed off the Moralee Conference season in style with a 7-2 victory over Sheffield Senators Saturday night.

Victory at Telford Ice Rink was the Tigers’ first two-point haul since February 13th, when they also beat the Senators – on that occasion at Ice Sheffield.

The county men found themselves 4-0 up at the halfway point of the game on Saturday night, with the Senators unable to mount any sustained pressure.Telford Tigers logo

Tigers NIHL coach Jason Parry was happy to use the opportunity to give some of his fringe players the chance to shine against Sheffield.

He said: “We started quite slowly, to be honest, and didn’t quiet take the game to them like we should have in the first ten minutes or so. But as soon as we did, we were all over them.

“It was pleasing that some of the guys who don’t get regular ice time were able to play a big part. Guys like James Callagher were brilliant and he deserved to get his first goal.

“It could have been a lot more and we had 55 shots on them in the end. The second period was excellent and everyone on the team got a lot of good ice time.”

Telford’s first goal came on 13 minutes, thanks to Joe Aston, before the youngster added a second just moments later.

Dan Harrison extended Telford’s lead at the start of the second period, before Karol Jets made it 4-0 after 26 minutes.

Josh Hustwick put the result beyond doubt with a fifth Tigers goal at the end of the session, although the visitors hit back after five minutes of the closing period.

Sheffield scored a second on 46 minutes, but Telford hit back at the end of the game, with goals from Callagher and Corey Goodison.

Parry added: “The season has been one of two halves. We started off really well and were in the play-off places. But we tailed off after Christmas and didn’t play great.

“It is disappointing we didn’t reach the play-offs, as that is a totally different sort of hockey. It would have been another chance to show what this team can do.

“We did well in the play-offs last season and it’s the next step of experience for the guys. Hopefully that will make us hungry to go one better next year.”
