Tigers Head Coach Tom Watkins named GB Under-20s coach

Tigers Head Coach Tom Watkins wants to reap the rewards of “an intense week” at the World Championships, after he was placed in charge of the GB under-20s programme.

Watkins will continue his coaching role with EPL double-winners The Tigers, alongside a post as Head Coach of the national under-20s side.

He guided the under-20s to a gold in last season’s tournament alongside Pete Russell, who has since been promoted to Head Coach of the senior GB side.

The former Coventry Blaze star, who will also work alongside Russell with the senior team, is looking forward to a competitive tournament in December.

He said: “It is really important that we set ourselves achievable goals and be realistic. It was great to get promoted, so we need to consolidate our position in Division 1B.

“I want to make sure that we are competitive, as it is a very tough level to play at. It is an intense week for the guys, so it would be great to be there playing well at the end of the week.”

Watkins’ elevation to Head Coach is just reward for a year that saw him guide The Tigers to their first ever double of major trophies in the EPL.

He added: “I am absolutely delighted, especially after what we achieved with The Tigers last season. Every time you go away, you always learn something new, or meet new people.

“That can only add to the skills I have. Being involved with the national side, whether as a player or coach, is a huge source of pride for me.

“It is important that for the World Championships, we get the best preparations and then start off on the right foot. It is all about making the best of our opportunities.”
