This summer, the Pittsburgh Penguins have a big choice to make with goaltender Tristan Jarry. Jarry signed a big deal last year but didn’t have the best season, losing his starter spot to Alex Nedeljkovic.
With four years left on his contract and the Penguins thinking about their future, they could trade him. Even though Kyle Dubas, the team’s president, believes Jarry can improve, trading him could be good for the Penguins. Jarry’s contract is a good deal compared to other top goalies in the NHL, making him an attractive option for other teams.
At 29, Jarry has solid numbers, like never having a goals-against average over 3.00 and always keeping his save percentage above .900. This summer could see some big changes for the Penguins, with Jarry possibly being one of them.
Los Angeles Kings
The Los Angeles Kings could definitely use a new goalie. Last year, their main goalie, Cam Talbot, was commendable, but he’s 36 years old. Both Talbot and his backup, David Rittich, might not stay because their contracts are ending.
They have a young goalie, Erik Portillo, who is only 23, but the Kings want to make their team stronger this summer. Getting a starting goalie is at the top of their list.
The Penguins would be interested in trading Jarry to them because the Kings have some young and talented players. This trade could help the Penguins get younger and faster.
Detroit Red Wings
Though it’s rare for these teams to consider trades due to their intense Stanley Cup rivalry, the Penguins and Detroit Red Wings could be excellent trading partners. The Red Wings are on the edge of playoff contention and need a reliable goalie to improve their playoff odds. Tristan Jarry could be the right fit, providing the stability they need in the net.
Additionally, a change in the environment could benefit both teams’ goalies. Detroit’s Ville Husso, with a contract for another season, has shown potential similar to Jarry but struggles with consistency and health. Swapping goaltenders might be the most logical approach if a trade were to happen.
While the Penguins have yet to make their plans for Jarry public, the ongoing uncertainty may continue throughout the offseason. Nonetheless, finding a trade partner should not be an issue if they decide moving on is best for the team, possibly boosting the Red Wings’ playoff odds in the process.
Montreal Canadiens
The Montreal Canadiens are working hard to build a stronger team. They already have a good backup goalie, Sam Montembeault, but they’re looking for a more skilled main goalie to help them win more games. Tristan Jarry could be the answer for them.
This move would be great for the Penguins, too. Plus, Jarry would get to play in Canada, his home country, and start fresh in a place that loves hockey. Even though there’s no proof that the Canadiens or Penguins are thinking about this trade, it wouldn’t be a shock if it happened.
