INDEPENDENCE, Mo. – The Kansas City Mavericks topped Toledo by a 3-1 final score Saturday night at Silverstein Eye Centers Arena.
Here are three observations from the win:
Whoa, Nelly
Chris Nell hasn’t seen a ton of ice time since coming to the Mavericks, making his second start in tonight’s game. He was stellar from start to finish, turning away 33 of 34 shots face en route to his second W in a Mavericks sweater. Nell benefitted from a little help from the posts but was strong all night, staying on his angles and showing good rebound control all night. His steady play was a big part of tonight’s win.
Poise Under Pressure
The Mavericks weathered a second period storm en route to the win, conceding the only Toledo goal on the night but rallying after to go on to win the game 3-1. There was no panic in the home side, continuing to establish their blue collar brand and hit the Walleye with a steady forecheck and responsible play on the defensive end. Facing the top team in the division, the poise from the squad stood out.
Two Big Goals
Patch Alber’s fourth goal of the season was a big one – finding the twine just over midway through the third as the game-winner. Just as big was the Mavericks’ first goal, Danny Smith’s first in the ECHL. Smith is a rookie out of RIT, signed with the Mavericks on Wednesday. Getting an early lead over Toledo was big for a Mavericks squad that had not held a lead since the Cincinnati game on the 12th.
The Mavericks close out their weekend triple-header against Toledo in a Sunday matinee, a 4:05 p.m. puck drop.
