Three-goal third period pushes Mavericks past Oilers 6-5

After a delayed start in Tulsa, the Oilers and Mavericks engaged in a back and forth battle at the BOK Center in Tulsa on Saturday night.

In a first period littered with penalties, the Mavericks killed off an early tripping penalty on Jordan Klimek just ten seconds into the game. At 7:22, Darian Dziurzynski scored his ninth of the campaign on a breakaway to put the Mavericks up 1-0 early. The unassisted Dziurzynski goal followed a save from Nick Schneider on a Tulsa breakaway. The Mavs would try to kill off a 5 on 3 as Schneider and Rocco Carzo had penalties 30 seconds apart, but Adam Pleskach would tie it at one on the power play. The Mavs would fail to convert on back to back power plays in the second half of the period and the score would remain tied as the clock hit all zeros.

The parade to the penalty box would continue in the second as the Mavericks had back to back penalty kill opportunities. After a successful kill of the first penalty, Adam Pleskach struck again on the second power play of the period to make it 2-1 in favor of the Oilers.  Mavs would head right back to the box on a hook by Zach Fischer and Steven Kaunisto would make them pay on the ensuing power play to make it 3-1 Oilers. With under five minutes to play in the period, Rocco Carzo would cut the Oilers lead to 3-2 with assists from both Dziurzynski brothers. Then, a Willie Raskob missile was tipped top shelf by Joey Sides with under 30 seconds to go in the period to tie it up at three as the teams headed to the locker room.

The Mavericks would explode in the period with three goals in the first five minutes of the period. David Dziurzynski would give the Mavericks the lead on a goal at the 3:13 mark with assists to Greg Betzold and Jordan Klimek. 48 seconds later, Jared VanWormer would find himself on the receiving end of a beautiful pass from Mark Cooper that would find twine to give the Mavericks a two goal lead. Willie Raskob would continue the scoring with a power play goal at the 4:41 mark of the third to make it 6-3 Mavericks.  Pleskach would finish off his hat trick at the 6:51 point in the third with a shot that deflected off of Schneider to cut the Mavericks lead to 6-4. He would make it four goals on the night just 17 seconds later to make it a one goal game. That would be the end of the scoring for the evening, though, as the Mavericks would withstand a late barrage from the Oilers and hold on for a 6-5 comeback win over the Oilers as they head into the holiday break.
