In Raleigh, Seth Jarvis hit for a hat trick on Thursday night for the Hurricanes, including two in a four-goal third period as the Canes downed the Montreal Canadiens, 6-2.
“That’s something I’ve dreamed of from when I was a little kid, so to be able to do that with the help of my teammates is everything for me,” Jarvis said. “The whole day, I was just kind of happy and in a good mood. … Luckily, it paid off for me.”
The first three goals of the outburst came in the first five minutes of the third stanza.
Sebastian Aho and Jarvis scored for a 4-2 lead to the Canes, and Jordan Staal scored at 5:00 to balloon the advantage to 5-2.
“I feel like the last few days, there’s been a lot of talk about the outdoor game and what’s going to happen when we get all that stuff, so I think we focuses really well tonight,” Aho said. ” … Obviously tomorrow, we’ll see the rink there and all that stuff. Can’t wait.”
Jarvis completed his hat trick with a shorthanded goal at 19:40 for the 6-2 final.
“That’s awesome. Just happy for [Jarvis] to see him scoring goals; [it] brings his confidence up, and hopefully he gets the momentum going,” Aho said. “Obviously he can score goals, everyone knows that, but that’s hockey. Sometimes you need a night like this.”
Antti Raanta made 20 saves in the Canes win.
Carolina improved to 36-10-8.
Montreal took a 1-0 lead in the first period off a marker from Michael Pezzetta.
“I think we just let it slip and we got a little complacent,” Pezzetta said. “And then once they got the one (to make it 3-2), I think we just let off the gas a bit. They’re a good hockey team. … I think they just capitalized on [their chances].”
The Canadiens dropped to 23-28-4.
Carolina replied to the Montreal goal with strikes from Jesperi Kotkaniemi and Jarvis’ first of the game for a 2-1 lead after the first period.
“Special night for him,” Hurricanes coach Rod Brind’Amour said of Jarvis. “Super happy for ‘Jarvy’ that his dad and brother were here on this night that he does it and has a great game.”
Montreal tied the game, 2-2, at 15:01 of the second on a marker form Rafael Harvey-Pinard to send the game to the third tied at the count.
” I think that we all know we’re a really, really good team as well,” Canadiens forward Rem Pitlick said. “They are too and they made some good plays, and those guys buried those pucks and that is why they’re a good team as well.”
