LOVELAND, Colo.- On Monday, October 2nd the Colorado Eagles began their 15th season with 15 skaters and three goalies on the ice for the start of the 2017-2018 training camp.
This marks the beginning of the Eagles defense of the Kelly Cup, won the previous June with quite a few changes on the roster. Only five skaters and one goalie from the championship team were wearing the Eagles crest to begin camp, although the NHL and AHL affiliate clubs, Colorado Avalanche and the San Antonio Rampage will likely add several skaters in addition to the those already assigned to the ECHL Eagles.
Re-signed for the 2017-2018 season are three defensemen, Matt Register (the ECHL Defenseman of the Year for the last two seasons), veteran Teigan Zahn, and blue line mainstay Jake Marto.
Joining these three are centers Matt Garbowsky, (2016-2017 ECHL Allstar Game MVP) and Ryan Harrison. Right winger Cam Maclise is also signed with the Eagles for the season, but is currently in the Manitoba Moose AHL training camp.
Goalie Lukas Hafner, who’s tenacious and aggressive style backstopped the Colorado Eagles to their first ECHL Championship last Spring, is also back to help defend the title this year.
Another familiar face signed this season is Colin Bowman. The 6′ 3″ Colorado-born defenseman is back for his fourth stint with the local ECHL team. Once again he has brought along his well-traveled older brother, center Drayson Bowman, who played three games for the Eagles in the 2015-2016 season.
These familiar faces, along with a few free agents and AHL assignees, will continue training camp through October 12th, including a preseason home-and-home series with Rapid City Rush starting with the home half at the BEC in Loveland Colorado on October, 6th at 7:05 P.M.
