The first Beanpot final in the 64 year history to be won 1-0 in overtime, the goal was scored by Alex Tuch for the Eagles. The goal capped of an incredible game for each team, both the Eagles and Terriers battled hard the entire game. Sean Maguire was given the Beanpot’s best goaltender award and the Most Valuable Player.
The game had many ups and downs with both teams feeling the brunt of unlikely bounces along the way. The Eagles were dominating the Terriers for the first eleven minutes of the first period. The Terriers were being outshot 11 to 1 within that first half of the period.
Sean Maguire was standing on his head, and just as the BU defense looked to letting up. The Lights suddenly went out in the arena, causing mass confusion and a  stoppage to the game. It took almost thirty minutes for the problem to fixed and the gam to
resume, both teams were sent to their locker rooms while the lights were being handled.
When BU came back they had a new found energy and life, they started to create more chances on Demko. The Terriers and the Eagles battled hard but neither team could score. The second period was more of the same, they continued to battle back and forth with BC still controlling the play.
The Eagles were the better team throughout most of the game and if not for Sean Maguire would be killing the Terriers. Maguire was the backbone to the Terrier and without him they wouldn’t be anywhere close in score. The Terriers were able to hit a few home run passes, but Demko made the big saves when it mattered for his team.
Neither team could find the back of the net through two periods and went back to the locker room tied 0-0. The third period was just more of the same, the Terrier controlled most of the early play. But the Eagles were able to battle back and get many more chances on Maguire.
They went back and forth trading opportunities at each end and both goalies were standing on their heads. Neither team could get anything past the net minders, the defense for both teams also continued to step up their play as the game wore on. But when neither team could find the back of net the game was sent to overtime.
Alex Tuch brought the puck over the blue line and ripped a shot far side past Sean Maguire to win the game for Eagles. Maguire and the Terriers were shocked and stunned, and one of the best Beanpot’s in tournament history came to an end. The Championship gave BC their 20th all time, and Coach York his finally Beanpot record with nine Beanpot championship’s.
After the game Sean Maguire said with tears in his eyes “I think if I would have saw all of it I would have stopped it. But he made a great shot, I guess I didn’t see too much of it. But I’ve made that save a thousand times and you know good for him, just one of those shots” Maguire was by far the better goalie in the game stopping 41 of 42 shots that he faced.
His opponent Thatcher Demko showed true grit after being hit in the neck with the puck and staying in the game. He was also plowed into and stayed on the ice for a few minutes, it didn’t look good but he stayed in the game. “When he asked me if I could finish the game, I just kinda looked at him like he was crazy. But I’m close with Burt (trainer) and were just kind of going back and forth there.” Demko left the press conference limping so it will be interesting to see how he is feeling heading into this weekend.
This Beanpot will go down in history as one of the best and most historic in the 64 year history of this great event. Hopefully next year will be even better.
