DENVER, Co – Another year of not making the playoffs will mean a lot of changes for the 2016-17 Colorado Avalanche. The biggest changes will likely come with the NHL Entry Draft. Also, with rumors of trades some unconventional draft strategies might be in the offing for the 2016 draft.
Colorado has nearly always gone with the tried and true BPA method of choosing the
best player available (usually a skilled forward) at their draft position and being confident that the skater will work well as an eventual asset either to don the burgundy and blue or provide trade fodder to acquire a player that may better suit the teams needs in the future.
best player available (usually a skilled forward) at their draft position and being confident that the skater will work well as an eventual asset either to don the burgundy and blue or provide trade fodder to acquire a player that may better suit the teams needs in the future. This year might be the time for the Avs to look at what they are currently lacking and grab the best player at that position. With Tyson Barrie needing a new contract, the Avs will be looking to get a strong, hard skating, defenseman to either supplement the Avs defensive corps or to partner with Barrie to free him to continue his scoring prowess.
Colorado can also choose to go the free agency route to find their defenseman of the future or they may choose to rely on the draft to acquire that young blueliner. The Avalanche are fairly strong down the middle of the ice but could use some help at wing. With most of the top wingers gone in PHN’s mock draft, look for the Avs to make the following announcement in Buffalo.
“With the 10th pick in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft, the Colorado Avalanche select, defenseman Mikhail Sergachev of the OHL’s Windsor Spitfires.”
