Tarasenko leads Blues past Islanders in 3-2 shootout win

In Brooklyn Monday, the visiting St Louis Blues’ Vladimir Tarasenko stole the show and two points from the New York Islanders in a 3-2 shootout decision.

Tarasenko had two goals in regulation and potted the winner in the skills competition.

Jake Allen made 40 saves for the Blues to get the win.

“I think every team in the League, to be honest, has a star, and he (Tarasenko) came through in the clutch today,” Allen said. “If he gets his chances like that, like most guys do in the League, he’ll bury them. He’s playing well right now.”

The Blues held a 2-0 lead until the Isles rallied with less than seven left in the third period.

Andrew Ladd scored first and then Anders Leetied with less than a minute left in regulation to force extra time and the shootout.

“[Allen] was seeing everything tonight,” Lee said. “He controlled all his rebounds and they were playing tough in front. When he’s seeing the puck like that, it’s tough to get opportunities and get those second chances.”

The loser’s point was welcome to the Islanders given their effort through most of the game.

“It’s a big point,” Isles head coach Doug Weight said. “Being down 2-0 against that hockey club, home or road, we’ll take the point.”

Thomas Greiss made 33 saves in taking the loss.

“Some good moments in the game for us, and obviously some moments that weren’t very good. I think coming back down two going into the third and plenty of opportunities to win the game, especially in overtime, every point counts. We’ll take it and move forward and get better for this coming week,” New York’s John Tavares said after the loss.
