Talbot, Senators blank Ducks, 3-0

In Ottawa, Cam Talbot made 32 saves and the Senators defeated the Anaheim Ducks, 3-0, on Monday night.“We came out, established our game early in the first period and never looked back from there,” Talbot said. “It’s a gutsy effort.”

It was Talbot’s first shutout with the Sens.

Alex DeBrincat hit for a double in the Ottawa win.

“Earlier in the year, maybe that second one doesn’t go in,” DeBrincat said. “But, you know, it’s nice that I’m getting the bounces now and hopefully I can keep that up.”

The Senators improved to 12-14-2.

“The NHL’s not meant for 10 forwards, but give guys credit,” Senators coach D.J. Smith said. “Guys played out of position, played different positions, played with different linemates and did a real nice job.”

Ottawa got all the offense they would need when Parker Kelly  hit for a marker in the sixth minute of the first period and a 1-0 lead.

Midway through the opening period, DeBrincat hit for a power play goal to push the lead to 2-0.

The Ducks dropped to 7-19-3.

“Sometimes when you get on these bad runs it seems like even the games you think you play well, they just don’t go your way. That’s the tough part,” Ducks defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk said.

“A bounce here or there, it seems to be the one mistake or kind of makes you lose those heartbreakers. We just need to keep working hard and create our own luck, create our own bounces and just chip away at it one game at a time.”

The score held there  until the third period when DeBrincat hit for second power play marker of the night at 12:00 of the third period for the 3-0 final.

Lukas Dostal made 35 saves in the Anaheim loss.

“He played extremely well,” Anaheim coach Dallas Eakins said. “He made a couple of huge saves. … He was real solid. He’s a great kid. He’s a kid that you can cheer for a lot just because of his character, his attitude, how he works. I wish we could’ve played a little bit better for him and maybe got it to an overtime game.”
