PHILADELPHIA – Five different strikers scored for the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday night in a 5-0 shelling of the Flyers.
Cam Talbot made 24 saves for the shutout.
“When you can have all four lines rolling, all three [defense] pairs … we have so much depth that on the road we can’t play the matchup game, so everyone gets out there and we get contributions from everybody,” Talbot said. “This is a deep squad and I think you can tell that when we’re on the road.”
LA improved to 7-2-2.
“He fits the group,” Kings coach Todd McLellan said of Talbot. “When the group plays consistent, we call on him to make some big saves, which he had to tonight. But if we’re playing the way we can play, we should be protecting him, not forcing him to make 10-bell saves every shift. And he’s got a calm demeanor. He’s confident. He’s all the things we thought we were getting.”
Adrian Kempe hit for a goal at at 14:32 of the opening frame for a 1-0 lead to the Kings.
“They stick to their structure and their systems, and they do a pretty good job at that,” Flyers forward Cam Atkinson said. “For us, we have to stick with our structure, but as soon as we kind of get away from it, that’s when it kind of cost us a little bit. It’s a good lesson for us … in order to play with some of these top teams, we have to play the right way right from the start.”
Anze Kopitar scored just 18 seconds later for a 2-0 advantage, and the wind was out of the Flyers sails.
“That was a team that played their third game in four nights and played last night, so we had to find a way to get on the board first, and getting the two goals back to back right away I think certainly helped us,” McLellan said.
In the middle frame, LA doubled their advantage to 4-0.
“They know we played last night and I’m sure they talked about it, but we weathered it,” Flyers coach John Tortorella said. “And I thought we played fairly well from there. The part for me is it’s 2-0 late in the second period, next thing you know you’re down 4-0.”
Arthur Kaliyev ballooned the lead to it to 3-0 off the power play at 16:01, and Trevor Moore hit for a strike at 19:44 for a 4-0 lead.
