Talbot earns first win against Rangers as Oilers win 2-1

2016-3-3 NHL PHI vs EDM
Cam Talbot (#33)

NEW YORK (NY) – Cam Talbot came into Madison Square Garden with an 0-4 record against his former team. After stopping 23 of 24 shots, the former Blueshirt notched the teams first victory of the season.

Henrik Lundqvist stopped 25 of 27 as the Rangers earned their fourth defeat in the teams first five games.

Mika Zibanejad opened the scoring for New York almost 13 minutes into the game off a beautiful cross-ice feed from Marc Staal. The center fought in the far corner for the puck before emerging victorious, finding a streaking Staal down the left side. The veteran defender returned the favor, dishing the puck back to Zibanejad who notched his first goal of the season.

The lead was short and sweet, as the Oilers would tie the game just 1:27 later.

Captain Conor McDavid found his own defender Darnell Nurse breaking into the zone who fired a shot on net. Lundqvist made the original save, but Ryan Nugent-Hopkins cleaned up the trash in front for his first of the year.

Second period didn’t see any goals, and the pace of play slowed down with each team recording a combined 15 shots on net.

The third period was presented with plenty of drama.

With about six minutes left, Rangers center Kevin Hayes seemed to have gotten ripped down from behind Oilers cage, but the refs let them play on.

Less than a minute later, winger Vladislav Namestnikov was called for a similar looking play as the Oilers carried the play into the Rangers zone. McDavid was sure to take advantage and gave his team a 2-1 lead with his second of the year.

McDavid has now been involved in every single goal the Oilers have scored this year.

Some late game heroics fell short as a desperate New York team was unable to beat Talbot.

New York looks to get back in the win column on Tuesday when they host the Avalanche.

Oilers look to extend their streak in Winnipeg on Tuesday when they play against the Jets.
