PWHL New York hires Sciba as assistant coach

NEW YORK, NY  – PWHL New York today announced that Josh Sciba has been hired as an assistant coach.  

  Sciba joins PWHL New York from Union College where he has spent the past eight seasons as head coach of the women’s hockey program. Before his time at Union College, Sciba was an assistant coach for the women’s hockey program at Colgate University where he worked together with PWHL New York head coach Greg Fargo.  

  “We’re extremely proud to welcome Josh to the New York family,” said PWHL New York General Manager Pascal Daoust. “Beyond his international background, expertise, experiences, and success both as a head coach and assistant, Josh is undoubtedly someone whose energy and values will enhance the already excellent staff in place. Together, our priority will remain to ensure each individual reaches their full potential and the organization achieves its culture and goals of excellence!” 

  A native of Westland, MI, Sciba also serves as an assistant coach of the U.S. Women’s National Team and most recently helped earn a silver medal at the 2024 IIHF Women’s World Championship in Utica, NY. Sciba served in the same role for the gold medal-winning 2023 U.S. Women’s National Team and silver medal-winning 2022 U.S. Women’s National Team. In his role, Sciba has coached PWHL New York players Alex Carpenter, Abby Roque and Abbey Levy. 

  “I want to thank Pascal Daoust, Greg Fargo, and the PWHL for granting me an opportunity to be part of PWHL New York,” said Sciba. “I’m excited to coach the best players in the world, and I’m eager to help continue the growth and success of the top women’s hockey league in the world.   Prior to beginning his coaching career, Sciba graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 2007, where he spent four seasons as a member of the Fighting Irish men’s hockey program.   

PWHL Montreal extend Grant-Mentis

MONTRÉAL, QC – PWHL Montréal announced on Friday that the club has re-signed forward Mikyla Grant-Mentis to a one-year Standard Player Agreement for the 2024-25 Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) season.

Grant-Mentis (5’6”) arrived in Montréal as a free agent late in the season and scored two goals in seven games. The 25-year-old Brampton, ON native also registered an assist in the team’s three playoff games, spending precious minutes on the ice. She began the season and her PWHL career in Ottawa where she joined the team as a training camp invite and went on to record three assists in six games.

She spent her NCAA career with the Merrimack College Warriors, scoring 52 goals, while assisting on 56 others in 137 games. Prior to the PWHL, Grant-Mentis played three full seasons in the PHF between Buffalo and Toronto where she earned league MVP honors in 2021.

“Mikyla helped our team from the moment she got to Montréal last season,” explained General Manager Danièle Sauvageau. “We are bringing back a player who raises her level of play when the stakes are high, as she showed us during the final stretch of our season and during the playoffs.”

PWHL Toronto sign Izzy Daniel to two-year deal

TORONTO  – PWHL Toronto announced today that forward Izzy Daniel has been signed to a two-year Standard Player Agreement through the 2025-26 Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) season. The 23-year-old was selected in the third round of the 2024 PWHL Draft (18th overall). 

“We are excited to bring Izzy Daniel into our organization. Izzy has an incredible hockey IQ,” explains General Manager Gina Kingsbury. “Her vision and spatial awareness make her a great puck distributor and allows her to make others around her better. We look forward to having her in our lineup for the next two seasons.” 

From Minneapolis, Minnesota, Daniel was named the 2024 Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award recipient in her final year at Cornell University, the first player from the school to receive the honour. The Big Red captain concluded her season with 59 points, including 21 goals and 38 assists, and averaged 1.74 points-per-game which was tops among all ECAC Hockey skaters. She was also named the ECAC Hockey Player of the Year and Ivy League Player of the Year.  

“I’m super excited and honoured to officially be a part of Toronto! I’m looking forward to experiencing the city and playing in front of the amazing fans,” Daniel shared. “Toronto is a first-class organization, and I can’t wait to get to know my teammates and work with the staff!”

Daniel joins a roster with fellow 2024 PWHL Draft picks Megan Carter, Julia Gosling and Raygan Kirk, free agents Daryl Watts and Emma Woods, and thirteen returning players including forwards Victoria Bach, Jesse Compher, Maggie Connors, Emma Maltais, Hannah Miller, Sarah Nurse, Natalie Spooner and Blayre Turnbull, defenders Renata Fast, Kali Flanagan, Jocelyne Larocque and Allie Munroe, and goaltender Kristen Campbell.

PWHL Ottawa sign draft pick Meixner

OTTAWA, Ontario PWHL Ottawa has announced the signing of forward Anna Meixner, selected in the sixth round of the 2024 PWHL Draft (32nd overall). The Zell am See, Austria athlete has inked a one-year Standard Player Agreement for the 2024-25 Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) season. 

 “I’ve been following the activities of the league throughout the first season. I think it’s every player’s dream to play with the best players in the world and to play against the best players in the world, so I’d say it caught my eye pretty quickly. I could see myself playing in front of these big crowds. I wanted to try it,” says the 30-year-old Meixner. 

 “Anna is a veteran player who had tremendous success in Europe. We think her offensive skills will translate really well in the PWHL. We are excited to have her as part of our organization. We like her speed and her instincts in the offensive zone,” says PWHL Ottawa General Manager Mike Hirshfeld. 

 Meixner has spent the last four seasons in the Swedish Women’s Hockey League (SDHL) with Brynäs IF. She enjoyed one of her best career seasons in 2022-23 with 53 points in 30 games to earn the title of most valuable player in this highly competitive league. In 2023-24, despite an injury-shortened season, she recorded 24 points in 22 games. Previously, she had spent most of her career in her native Austria playing for the EHV Sabres, a club based in Vienna. 

 On the international scene, Meixner has been captain of the Austrian National Women’s Team for the past three years. At April’s IIHF Division 1A Women’s World Championship, she recorded seven points (3G, 4A) in five games. 

 “During the (SDHL) finals in Sweden, we played in front of a crowd of over 8,000. It was an unbelievable experience for me. Last year, the World Championship was held at home, in Austria, and I was captain of our team. I realize that I have the privilege of inspiring many young hockey players. It’s something that I strive for,” explains Meixner.

 Meixner becomes the first player selected in the 2024 PWHL Draft to sign a contract with PWHL Ottawa. She joins free agents Rebecca Leslie, Logan Angers and Alexa Vasko on the 2024-25 roster with 13 returning players including forwards Emily Clark, Shiann Darkangelo, Gabbie Hughes, Brianne Jenner, Hayley Scamurra, Natalie Snodgrass and Tereza Vanišová, defenders Ashton Bell, Zoe Boyd, Savannah Harmon, Jincy Roese and Aneta Tejralová, and goaltender Emerance Maschmeyer.

L’ÉQUIPE LPHF OTTAWA ACCORDE UN CONTRAT À ANNA MEIXNER 

 OTTAWA, Ontario (27 juin 2024) – L’équipe LPHF Ottawa a annoncé aujourd’hui la mise sous contrat de l’attaquante Anna Meixner. L’athlète qui est originaire de Zell am See, en Autriche, a été sélectionnée en sixième ronde (32e au total) lors du dernier repêchage de la Ligue professionnelle de hockey féminin (LPHF). Elle a signé un contrat d’un an, bon pour la saison 2024-25. 

 «J’ai suivi les activités de cette ligue tout au long de la première saison. Je crois bien que toutes les joueuses rêvent d’évoluer parmi les meilleures joueuses au monde et aussi d’affronter les meilleures joueuses au monde. Je dirais donc que mon intérêt a été piqué assez rapidement. J’ai eu envie de jouer devant ces foules imposantes. J’ai eu envie de tenter ma chance», raconte la joueuse qui est âgée de 30 ans.  

 «Anna est une joueuse d’expérience qui a connu beaucoup de succès en Europe. Nous croyons que ses aptitudes à l’attaque lui permettront de très rapidement s’adapter à la LPHF. Nous sommes très heureux de savoir qu’elle évoluera au sein de notre organisation. Nous aimons beaucoup sa vitesse et son sens du jeu en zone d’attaque», déclare le directeur général d’Ottawa, Mike Hirshfeld. 

 Meixner a passé les quatre dernières saisons au sein de la Ligue féminine de hockey sur glace suédoise (SDHL) avec le club Brynäs IF. Elle a connu une de ses meilleures saisons en carrière en 2022-23. Sa récolte de 53 points en 30 parties lui a valu le titre de joueuse par excellence au sein de ce circuit au calibre très relevé. En 2023-24, malgré une saison écourtée par une blessure, elle a obtenu 24 points en 22 parties. Auparavant, elle a passé l’essentiel de sa carrière dans son pays natal, l’Autriche. Elle a porté les couleurs des EHV Sabres, une formation qui évolue à Vienne. 

 Sur la scène internationale, elle a été la capitaine de l’équipe nationale de l’Autriche au cours des trois dernières années. Lors de la dernière édition du Championnat mondial féminin de Division 1A de l’IIHF, le printemps dernier, elle a inscrit sept points (trois buts et quatre mentions d’aide) en cinq rencontres. 

 «Durant la série finale, en Suède, nous avons joué devant une foule supérieure à 8000 spectateurs. C’était une expérience incroyable pour moi. L’an dernier, le Championnat mondial avait lieu chez nous, en Autriche, et j’étais la capitaine de notre équipe. Je réalise que j’ai le privilège d’inspirer plusieurs jeunes hockeyeurs. C’est quelque chose qui me motive», explique-t-elle. 

 Meixner devient la première joueuse issue du repêchage 2024 de la LPHF à s’entendre avec l’équipe LPHF Ottawa. Elle se joint aux joueuses autonomes Rebecca Leslie, Logan Angers et Alexa Vasko ainsi qu’à un groupe de 13 joueuses qui ont passé la saison 2024 dans la capitale. PWHL Ottawa extend Darkangelo

OTTAWA, Ontario PWHL Ottawa announced today that the team has re-signed centre Shiann Darkangelo to a one-year contract extension for the 2024-25 Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) season.

 The experienced 30-year-old from Brighton, Michigan, came to Ottawa at the PWHL Trade Deadline on March 18. She played in 24 games during the 2024 season, collecting one assist. 

 Previously, she captained the Toronto Six in the Premier Hockey Federation (PHF) for three seasons, leading the last team to win the Isobel Cup at the conclusion of the 2022-23 season. Since graduating from Quinnipiac University in 2015, Darkangelo has nine years of pro experience across the PWHL, PHF, as well as the Professional Women’s Hockey Players Association (PWHPA) and the Canadian Women’s Hockey League (CWHL). She also won gold with Team USA at the 2016 IIHF Women’s World Championship. 

 “Shiann brings a veteran presence to our clubhouse. On top of being a leader, she has good size and she has this element of physicality. We liked what we saw from her last year. We are excited to integrate her even more this season,” comments PWHL Ottawa General Manager Mike Hirshfeld. 

 “I’m thrilled to be back in Ottawa, playing in front of our incredible fans. I can’t wait to start our journey for the cup,” says Darkangelo.

 OTTAWA, Ontario (26 juin 2024) – L’équipe LPHF Ottawa a annoncé aujourd’hui qu’un nouveau contrat d’un an, bon pour les saisons 2024-25 de la Ligue professionnelle de hockey féminin (LPHF), a été accordé à l’attaquante Shiann Darkangelo. 

 L’expérimentée athlète de 30 ans, qui est originaire de Brighton, au Michigan, s’est jointe à l’équipe LPHF Ottawa lors de la date limite des transactions dans la LPHF, le 18 mars dernier. Elle a participé à 24 matchs durant la saison 2024, récoltant une mention d’aide. 

 Auparavant, elle a été la capitaine du Toronto Six dans la Fédération première de hockey (FPH) pendant trois saisons. Elle a donc fait partie de la dernière équipe à remporter la Coupe Isobel, au terme de la saison 2022-23. Elle a évolué au sein de la Ligue canadienne de hockey féminin (LCHF) et de la Ligue nationale de hockey féminin (LNHF). Elle a également remporté une médaille d’or avec l’équipe américaine lors du Championnat mondial féminin de l’IIHF en 2016. 

 «L’expérience de Shiann se fait sentir dans notre vestiaire. En plus de son leadership, elle possède un bon gabarit et elle est capable de se démarquer au niveau du jeu physique. Nous avons bien aimé ce qu’elle a pu apporter la saison dernière. Nous avons très hâte de l’intégrer encore davantage à notre organisation la saison prochaine», commente le directeur général de l’équipe LPHF Ottawa, Mike Hirshfeld.

PWHL Toronto sign blueliner Carter

TORONTO – PWHL Toronto has announced the signing of defender Megan Carter, selected in the second round of the 2024 PWHL Draft (12th overall). The Milton, Ontario blueliner has inked a two-year Standard Player Agreement through the 2025-26 Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) season.

“Megan Carter is a great puck-moving D whose game is consistent and reliable. She doesn’t shy away from playing a physical game and it won’t take long for her to adjust to our style of play,” says General Manager Gina Kingsbury. “We are happy to have her join us on the blue line and expect her to not only bring depth to our backend but add to our group on and off the ice.” 

Carter spent all five years of her NCAA eligibility at Northeastern University. The 23-year-old began her collegiate career being named to the Hockey East All-Rookie Team in 2019-20 and was named Hockey East Best Defender in back-to-back years to close out her tenure with the Huskies in 2022-23 and 2023-24. In her senior year, Carter led on and off the ice as she served as captain and was valedictorian of her graduating class. Representing Canada on the international stage, she was part of the gold medal winning team at the 2019 IIHF U18 Women’s World Championship. 

 

“I am beyond excited and honoured to be officially joining the PWHL Toronto family!
