Toledo’s Hawkins wins ECHL scoring title

The ECHL on Sunday announced that Brandon Hawkins of the Toledo Walleye has won the league scoring championship with 93 points (40g-53a).Action photo of Brandon Hawkins of the Toledo Walleye

Kansas City’s Patrick Curry (39g-48a) and Kalamazoo’s Erik Bradford (30g-57a) were tied for second with 87 points each, followed by Alex Kile of Maine with 80 points (35g-45a) and Rapid City’s Alex Aleardi (31g-48a) and Fort Wayne’s Jack Dugan (20g-59a) with 79 points each.

Hawkins, who was named to the All-ECHL First Team last week, also led the league with 40 goals, 34 power-play points and 346 shots on goal and he was tied for first with 15 power-play goals.

Walleye come back to win finale over Komets

FORT WAYNE, IN – The Toledo Walleye defeated the Fort Wayne Komets 4-3 on Sunday evening at the Memorial Coliseum.Walleye come back to win finale over Komets

What Happened:

The Toledo Walleye headed to Indiana for the 2023-24 regular season finale against the Fort Wayne Komets.

Jan Bednar started between the pipes for the Walleye. Michael Prapavessis and Jacob Graves patrolled the blue line while Sam Craggs, Orrin Centazzo and Brandon Kruse led the Toledo attack.

Tyler Parks protected the home net for the Komets. Jake Johnson and Martin Has manned the defense while Ethan Keppen, Jake Chiasson and longtime Komet Shawn Szydlowski filled out the Fort Wayne front in what could be Szydlowski’s final game.

The Komets started the action at 5:33 when Johnson found the net to break the ice. Alexis D’Aoust and Jack Dugan assisted the initial tally.

Fort Wayne struck again at 7:30, this time Keppen hit twine to put the Komets up 2-0. Chiasson added a solo assist to the score.

That wrapped the first period with the Walleye trailing the Komets 2-0. Toledo outshot Fort Wayne in the period 12-8.

The second period started with the Walleye finding the scoreboard as Jed Pietila buried his first professional goal at 6:32. Craggs and Centazzo assisted the blue-liner’s first pro score.

The Fish knotted the game at 2-2 when Chase Gresock lit the lamp at 15:24. The New Brunswick duo of Brady Gilmour and Jason Willms assisted the equalizer.

That wrapped the second set of 20 minutes with the Walleye and Komets tied at 2-2. Toledo outshot Fort Wayne 9-8 in the period and 21-16 through two periods.

The Walleye came out and took the lead at 3:48 of the third when Trenton Bliss put the Fish in front. Willms added a solo assist for his second helper of the day.

The Walleye added an insurance score at 16:56 when Brendan Michaelian found the net for his first ECHL goal. Pietila and Darian Pilon added assists, each for their second assist of the season.

The Komets brought it back within one at 17:10 when Szydlowski scored the final goal of the Komets’ season in what would be a fitting way to end his career. Ture Linden and Johnson assisted the score.

The horns sounded with the Walleye winning the regular season finale over the Fort Wayne Komets 4-3. The Walleye outshot the Komets 12-9 in the period and 33-25 overall.

The Walleye finish the season at 48-14-4-5 with 105 points and the Central Division crown. Toledo closes out the season on a 14 game win streak, including their last ten on the road and their last nine at home. The overall and home win streaks are season records, while the road winning streak ties the season-high.

What Happened:

The Toledo Walleye welcomed the Iowa Heartlanders back into the Huntington Center to close out the weekend looking for a weekend sweep.

Jan Bednar defended the home net for the Walleye. Riley McCourt and Grant Gabriele manned the defence while Brandon Hawkins, Trenton Bliss and Orrin Centazzo led the Toledo attack.

Drew DeRidder started between the pipes for the visiting Heartlanders. Ben Brinkman and Hunter Lellig staffed the defence while Pavel Novak, Adam Goodsir and Yuki Miura filled out the attack for Iowa.

The action began with the two teams exchanging blows, at 3:56, sending McCourt and Louka Henault to the Toledo and Iowa penalty boxes respectively. Both penalties were killed off.

The Walleye found the scoreboard first at 15:53 when Bliss hit paydirt for the third time in two days. Mitch Lewandowski and Matt Anderson earned assists on the icebreaker

The two teams crowded together again, resulting in another pair of penalties and another four-on-four at 11:49. Adrien Beraldo was penalized for Roughing for the Fish, while Jack Durflinger was caught Cross-Checking for the Heartlanders.

Play dropped into four-on-three and a Walleye power play at 13:08 when Casey Dornbach was sent to the Heartlanders penalty box for Hooking.

The Walleye converted the power play at 13:28 when Bliss added yet another goal – his fourth in two days – to put the Walleye up 2-0. McCourt and Hawkins were the helpers on the score.

The remainder of the exchanged penalties from 11:49 were killed off after 21 seconds of four-on-four.

That wrapped the first frame with the Walleye leading the Heartlanders 2-0.

The Toledo Walleye welcome the Iowa Heartlanders back into the Huntington Center for Labatt Hockey Night in Toledo to begin a set of back-to-back games.

John Lethemon defended the home net for the Walleye. Matt Anderson and Brendon Michaelian manned the defence while Sam Craggs, Conlan Keenan and Brandon Kruse led the Toledo attack.

Peyton Jones started between the pipes for the visiting Heartlanders. Anthony Firriolo and Kyle Masters staffed the defence while Casey Dornbach, Max Johnson and Louis Boudon filled out the attack for Iowa.

The first period action began with a Walleye power play at 1:08 when Kevin McKernan was penalized for Tripping. The Heartlanders killed off the penalty successfully.

Toledo got their next power play chance at 6:54 when Louka Henault was caught Tripping. Iowa killed off the ensuing man-advantage.

The Walleye got their third power play chance at 10:42 when Ben Brinkman was charged with a Delay of Game penalty. The Heartlanders killed off their third penalty of the period.

Iowa got their first power play chance at 19:19 as Craggs was penalized for Delay of Game. The power play would finish the first period and carry over through the first 1:19 of the second period.

The first frame closed with the Walleye and the Heartlanders in a scoreless tie.

Then it was Bliss for his second goal of the evening at 5:17. Michaelian and Hawkins added assists to the score, making it 3-0 Walleye.

The Heartlanders got their next power play chance at 6:42 when Riley Sawchuk was penalized for Boarding.

The Iowa power play was short-lived as Pavel Novak was sent to the Iowa penalty box for Cross-Checking at 6:49, dropping the play to four-on-four.

Before the end of the four-on-four, Centazzo was caught Slashing at 8:34, dropping play to four-on-three for Iowa for eight seconds and then back to four-on-four for seven seconds before 1:45 of a standard power play.

All penalties were killed off.

Iowa escaped the shutout at 11:59 when Yuki Miura lit the lamp. Boudon and Masters added helpers to the score.

The Walleye sealed the win with an empty-netter by McCourt at 18:34 from Hawkins to make it 4-1 Walleye.

The Toledo Walleye welcomed the Maine Mariners into the Huntington Center for the first time ever to begin a three-game weekend.

John Lethemon defended the home net for the Walleye. Brendon Michaelian and Michael Prapavessis manned the defence while Brandon Hawkins, Trenton Bliss and Orrin Centazzo led the Toledo attack.

Kyle Keyser started between the pipes for the visiting Mariners. Zach Malatesta and Ryan Mast staffed the defence while Jimmy Lambert, Alex Kile and Chase Zieky filled out the Maine attack.

The Fish started the scoring when Thomas Farrell lit the lamp for his second goal of the season at 4:45. Mitch Lewandowski and Riley Sawchuk added assists to the icebreaker.

The first penalties of the game were exchanged between the two teams at 14:47, resulting in four-on-four hockey. Sam Craggs and Connor Doherty exchanged Roughing penalties for the Walleye and Mariners respectively.

The Walleye added on at 18:33 when Alexandre Doucet deflected the puck beyond Keyser. Sawchuk and Lewandowski each added their second assists of the night on the tally.

That wrapped the first period with the Walleye leading the Mariners 2-0.

The Walleye sealed the deal with an empty-netter by Hawkins at 18:45. Centazzo and Bliss added assists to the empty net score.

The Toledo Walleye welcomed the Kalamazoo Wings back into the Huntington Center to begin a home-and-home weekend series.

John Lethemon defended the home net for the Walleye. Matt Anderson and Michael Prapavessis manned the defence while Sam Craggs, Conlan Keenan and Brandon Kruse led the Toledo attack.

Jonathan Lemieux started between the pipes for the visiting Wings. Michael Joyaux and Collin Saccoman staffed the defence while David Keefer, Erik Bradford and Joshua Passolt filled out the Kalamazoo attack.

The action began with a Wings power play at :42 when Brandon Hawkins was assessed an early Tripping penalty.

Kalamazoo converted the power play at 2:02 when Collin Adams found the backside of the net. Ayden MacDonald and Jordan Seyfert assisted the icebreaker to put the Wings up 1-0.

The Wings scored another at 3:55 after a delayed penalty allowed them an extra man. Jay Keranen lit the lamp, with Adams and Seyfert adding assists for their second points of the night.

The Walleye found the score column at 13:51 when Craggs hit twine. Keenan and Kruse added assists to the tally. The assist marked the 100th point of Keenan’s professional career.

The Wings stretched their lead back to two at 3-1 at 14:36 when Bradford found the net. Passolt and Keefer assisted the score.

The Walleye got their first power play of the night at 17:49 when Keranen was sent to the Wings penalty box for Hooking. The Wings killed off the power play.
