Recap of NHL from 24 March 2026

There was movement across the Eastern Conference standings on a 15-game night: Zach Werenski led Columbus into second place in the Metropolitan Division for the first time this season while Ottawa withstood a Detroit comeback to climb into a postseason position for the first time in more than three months.
* Connor McDavid became the third-fastest player in NHL history to 1,200 career points as Edmonton bested Utah to move into second place in the Pacific Division.

* The 2025-26 Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy race was on full display Tuesday as four of the NHL’s five 40-goal scorers all found the back of the net with three looking to claim the award for the first time in their careers.

COLUMBUS CLIMBS TO SECOND IN METROPOLITAN, OTTAWA JUMPS INTO WILD CARD

Crucial wins by Columbus (38-22-11, 87 points) and Ottawa (38-24-9, 85 points) helped shake up the Eastern Conference as both clubs climbed the standings.

* The Blue Jackets occupy a top two position in their division for the first time this season after Zach Werenski (1-1—2) led Columbus to victory as it leapfrogged Pittsburgh (35-20-16, 86 points) for second in the Metropolitan Division. The Blue Jackets last ranked among the top two teams in their division on Oct. 15, 2021 – four days into the 2021-22 season.

* Werenski recorded his 25th multi-point game of 2025-26 and tied Artemi Panarin (2018-19) for the most in a single season in Blue Jackets history. Werenski (64 GP) also matched Erik Karlsson (64 GP in 2022-23) for the fewest games by a defenseman to reach the mark in the past 35 years – the last blueliner to hit the threshold in fewer games was Paul Coffey (53 GP in 1985-86).

* The Senators entered a pivotal matchup against the Red Wings missing five defensemen due to injury – and with two blueliners in the lineup making their NHL debut in the same game for the first time in franchise history – but still earned their fourth consecutive victory to jump into the second Wild Card spot and a playoff position for the first time since Dec. 3.

* Carter Yakemchuk (1-1—2), one of the two Ottawa defensemen making their NHL debut alongside Jorian Donovan, became the second Senators blueliner to record multiple points in his League debut (also Maxime Lajoie: 1-1—2 on Oct. 4, 2018) and the third defenseman in franchise history to score a goal in his NHL debut, alongside Lajoie and Wade Redden (Oct. 5, 1996).

McDAVID HITS MULTIPLE MILESTONES, SEASON PLATEAU IN OILERS VICTORY

Connor McDavid (2-0—2) scored twice to reach 400 career goals and 1,200 career points (401-799—1,200 in 784 GP) as the Oilers (35-28-9, 79 points) defeated the Mammoth (37-29-6, 80 points) to move into second place in the Pacific Division behind the Ducks (40-27-4, 84 points), who secured their 40th victory of the season with the help of a three-assist night by John Carlson.

* With his first goal of the game, McDavid became the fifth player in franchise history to reach 400 with the club. With his second, the Edmonton captain became the seventh active skater to hit the 1,200-point milestone while also notching his fifth career 40-goal season – the fourth most in Oilers history.

RACE FOR THE “ROCKET” CONTINUES AS 40-GOAL SCORERS SHINE ON 15-GAME NIGHT
Three of the League’s other 40-goal scorers also found the back of the net Tuesday and continued their pursuit of their first career Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy: Nathan MacKinnon (46), Cole Caufield (44) and Wyatt Johnston (40). The NHL can feature a first-time winner of the “Rocket” Trophy for the second straight season (Leon Draisaitl in 2024-25) and fifth time in seven campaigns.

* MacKinnon scored one of six Colorado goals and kept his two-goal lead in the Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy race. MacKinnon (412) can become the first player in NHL history to claim his first goal-scoring title after amassing 400-plus career goals. Leon Draisaitl in 2024-25 (399) currently holds the distinction for most career tallies prior to their first scoring title.

* Caufield scored the second of five straight Canadiens goals as Montreal earned its 24th comeback win of the season and tied their most in a single campaign (also 1992-93 & 1975-76). Caufield, on pace to produce the first 50-goal season by a Canadiens player since 1989-90, can become the franchise’s first skater to capture the Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy since its inception in 1998-99 and just the third in the expansion era (since 1967-68) to lead the League in goals (outright or tied) following Guy Lafleur (1977-78) and Steve Shutt (1976-77).

* Johnston (2-1—3) scored twice to record his first career 40-goal season, which is tied with Nikita Kucherov and Connor McDavid for the third most among all players this season. The 22-year-old Stars forward can become the youngest player to win the Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy since Steven Stamkos scored 60 goals to claim the award in 2011-12.

WILD CARD SPOTS IN THE WEST STILL TO BE DETERMINED
The streaking Predators lengthened the League’s longest active winning streak to maintain Wild Card 2, while the Jets jumped the Sharks and kept pace with Nashville for that final spot.

* Filip Forsberg (1-2—3) and Roman Josi (1-0—1) accounted for two of Nashville’s five first-period goals as the Predators (34-28-9, 77 points) extended their winning streak to five games and inched closer to the Mammoth (37-29-6, 80 points) for the Western Conference’s first Wild Card spot. Forsberg and Josi have 16 combined points over Nashville’s five-game run, while Steven Stamkos, Jonathan Marchessault and Ryan O’Reilly – who all joined the team within the last three seasons – have a total of 18.

* Mark Scheifele (1-2—3) helped the Jets (30-29-12, 72 points) capture a regulation win to leapfrog the Sharks (32-31-6, 70 points) in the Western Conference standings and kept pace with the Predators for Wild Card 2. Winnipeg can become the first team to qualify for the Stanley Cup Playoffs after suffering an 11-game winless streak earlier in the season (Dec. 15, 2025 – Jan. 8) since the 1998-99 Flyers (12 GP from Feb. 24 – March 16, 1999).

KUCHEROV’S FOURTH CAREER 120-POINT SEASON FEATURED IN LIVE UPDATES
Tuesday’s edition of #NHLStats: Live Updates featured more notes from the fourth-last 15-game day this season (also March 28, April 4 & April 11), including Nikita Kucherov (0-1—1) reaching 120 points on the season before Erik Cernak collected the go-ahead goal with 2:53 remaining in regulation as the Lightning (44-21-5, 93 points) climbed within two points of the idle Sabres (44-20-7, 95 points) for first place in the Atlantic Division. Kucherov has a two- and five-point lead on Connor McDavid (118) and Nathan MacKinnon (115), respectively, in the Art Ross Trophy race.

Boston and Buffalo are among the seven teams who currently hold a playoff position after missing last season (4 in the East & 3 in the West).

Recap of NHL from 18 October 2025

Seth Jarvis achieved an NHL first with his fourth game-winning goal of the season and helped his Hurricanes remain the only undefeated team in the League.

* The Avalanche and Golden Knights both kept their season-opening point streaks alive thanks to multi-point performances from star players.

* A four-game Sunday will start with a pair of matinee matchups on Sportsnet featuring the likes of Alex Ovechkin, Quinn Hughes and Connor McDavid.

JARVIS SCORES ANOTHER WINNER AS HURRICANES STAY PERFECT
After Jordan Staal (2-0—2) scored twice in the opening 3:58 and the Kings rallied to erase a three-goal deficit and force overtime, Seth Jarvis (1-0—1) netted the winner in the extra frame – his fourth game-winning goal in five contests. The Hurricanes (5-0-0) started a season on a five-game win streak for the third time in franchise history and remain the NHL’s only undefeated team in 2025-26.

* Staal’s first tally came just 12 seconds into the game, tied for the third-fastest game-opening goal in Hurricanes/Whalers history. His two tallies in the opening 3:58 also marked the fourth-fastest two goals from the start of a game by one player in franchise history and the fastest in Hurricanes team history.

* The Hurricanes will look to maintain their perfect record in the coming week against a pair of teams that also carry season-opening point streaks: Carolina faces Vegas (4-0-2) on Monday and Colorado on Thursday (5-0-1). The Golden Knights and Avalanche are two of only four teams that have not suffered a regulation loss this season (also CAR & SEA).

AVALANCHE AND GOLDEN KNIGHTS KEEP SEASON-OPENING POINT STREAKS ALIVE

The Avalanche (5-0-1) and Golden Knights (4-0-2) both extended their season-opening point streaks to six games thanks to noteworthy performances from their star players.

* Nathan MacKinnon (2-0—2) matched the fewest games he’s needed to reach the 10-point mark in a season (also 6 GP in 2024-25) after his 55th career multi-goal game, which tied Milan Hejduk for the fourth most in Avalanche/Nordiques history.

* Brent Burns, skating in his first season with Colorado, collected an assist in his fourth straight contest and became the oldest player in Avalanche/Nordiques history to record a four-game point streak. The only other 40-year-old with a run of that length for the franchise is Ray Bourque (5 & 4 GP in 2000-01).

* Mark Stone (2-2—4) and Jack Eichel (0-4—4) each recorded four-point outings to lift the Golden Knights to a third straight victory. It marked the fourth time multiple Vegas players had four-point performances in the same game, following Oct. 9, 2024 (2), Nov.10, 2022 (2) and March 18, 2019 (2).

* Stone extended his season-opening assist streak to six games and established the longest run in Golden Knights history, while Eichel became the fifth active player to accumulate five multi-point outings through the first six games or fewer of a season. The others: Connor McDavid (5 GP in 2021-22), Auston Matthews (5 GP in 2018-19), MacKinnon (6 GP in 2023-24) and Jack Hughes (6 GP in 2023-24).

SCHAEFER EXTENDS CAREER-OPENING POINT STREAK IN ISLANDERS WIN

Matthew Schaefer (0-1—1) assisted on one of three game-tying goals by the Islanders while logging a team-high 22:33 time on ice to extend his career-opening point streak to five games (1-4—5 in 5 GP), before captain Anders Lee cemented the victory with a game winner with 1:03 remaining in regulation. Lee tied Denis Potvin (44) for the fourth-most game-winning goals in Islanders history.

* Schaefer matched the second-longest point streak in NHL history by a defenseman from start of career, behind only Marek Zidlicky (6 GP in 2003-04). Schaefer also matched Cale Makar (5 GP in 2019-20) for the longest such streak among active blueliners.

* Schaefer is one of five No. 1 picks to record a point in each of his first five career games, following Alex Ovechkin (8 GP in 2005-06), Alexandre Daigle (7 GP in 1993-94), Sidney Crosby (6 GP in 2005-06) and Eric Lindros (5 GP in 1992-93).

FRANCHISE RECORDS AND MILESTONES ON HOCKEY NIGHT IN CANADA
Saturday’s Hockey Night in Canada broadcast saw a pair of veteran forwards reach key franchise marks, with Jets forward Mark Scheifele becoming the Jets/Thrashers all-time points leader and John Tavares (2-0—2) recording his 500th point since joining the Maple Leafs.

* Scheifele scored a power-play goal 2:39 after the opening face off to record his 813th career point and break a tie with longtime teammate Blake Wheeler, who recorded a message of congratulations, for the most points in Jets/Thrashers history. Scheifele, who was the first draft pick by the Jets after their return to Winnipeg was announced (7th overall in 2011), also holds the franchise mark for career goals (342).

* Scheifele wasn’t the only veteran forward who had a productive night for the Jets. After a feature sit down interview with Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet on his journey back to the NHL ahead of his first Hockey Night in Canada appearance in years, Jonathan Toews (0-2—2) recorded his first multi-assist game since Dec. 23, 2022 and his first multi-point game since Jan. 19, 2023.

* In a back-and-forth matchup between Toronto and Seattle, the Maple Leafs scored three tying goals (including a pair from Tavares) to force extra time, but the Kraken extended their season-opening point streak to five games (3-0-2) on an overtime winner from defenseman Josh Mahura – his first goal in 135 games.

* Tavares, who now sits three shy of the 500-goal milestone, recorded his 500th point as a member of the Maple Leafs (225-275—500 in 521 GP). Tavares (497) is one of two players in the hunt for 500 goals this season alongside Red Wings forward Patrick Kane (494).

McDAVID’S POINT STREAK FEATURED IN #NHLSTATS: LIVE UPDATES
Jack Hughes (2-1—3) and Jesper Bratt (1-1—2) each had multi-point performances to lead the Devils to a fourth straight win but not before Connor McDavid (0-2—2) extended his point streak against New Jersey to 17 games. Find notes on all 13 games from Saturday’s slate in #NHLStats: Live Updates.

ECHL season opens on Friday

The 38th season of the ECHL begins on Friday with eight games, continues on Saturday with 13 games and concludes with seven games on Sunday.ECHL season opens on Friday

The ECHL welcomes the expansion Greensboro Gargoyles for the 2025-26 season, giving the League 30 teams in 23 states and one Canadian province. Greensboro plays its first game in team history on Saturday when it hosts Jacksonville.

Friday’s schedule features a pair of rematches from the 2025 Kelly Cup Playoffs as the defending Kelly Cup champion Trois-Rivières Lions host Reading and Orlando entertains Florida. Other games on Friday’s schedule include Greenville taking on Utah, Savannah welcoming Norfolk, Indy hosting Fort Wayne, Iowa entertaining Tulsa, Kansas City taking on Rapid City and Tahoe hosting Idaho.

In addition to Greensboro, eight other teams open their home schedule on Saturday with Worcester taking on Maine, Atlanta hosting Utah, Florida welcoming Orlando, South Carolina entertaining Norfolk, Bloomington taking on Iowa, Cincinnati hosting Wheeling, Kalamazoo welcoming Fort Wayne and Wichita hosting Allen. Sunday sees Maine open its home schedule by hosting Reading.

Began in 1988-89 with five teams in four states, the ECHL has grown into a coast-to-coast league that has 30 teams in 23 states and one Canadian province playing 1,080 games from Oct. 17, 2025 to April 12, 2026. The ECHL is the third-longest tenured professional hockey league behind only the National Hockey League and the American Hockey League, and last season welcomed an average of 4,984 fans per game, marking the League’s highest per-game average in 27 years. Additionally, between the regular season and Kelly Cup Playoffs, an all-time record of 5,590,459 fans attended ECHL games.

The ECHL has affiliations with 30 teams in the National Hockey League in 2025-26, marking the 29th consecutive season that the league had affiliations with at least 20 teams in the NHL.

New faces behind the benches

Fourteen of the 30 ECHL teams will have a new coach in charge as the 2025-26 season gets underway.

Sylvain Cloutier takes charge as the new head coach in Adirondack, returning to Glens Falls where he played for the Red Wings in the American Hockey League and the IceHawks and Frostbite in the United Hockey League.

Steve Martinson, who previously coached Allen from 2012-22, returns behind the bench for the Americans after spending last season as head coach for Athens in the Federal Prospects Hockey League.

In Atlanta, Matt Ginn assumes the head-coaching position after serving as the team’s assistant coach in 2024-25.

After spending the last four seasons as an assistant coach in Kansas City, Riley Weselowski is the new man in charge for Cincinnati, returning to the Cyclones where he was a player in 2015-16.

Scott Burt is the first head coach in Greensboro Gargoyles’ team history, after spending the last four seasons as head coach in Rapid City.

Chad Costello brings two years of ECHL head-coaching experience to Greenville. Costello went 70-67-7 as head coach in Allen from 2022-24.

Iowa’s new head coach is Chuck Weber, who previously led Cincinnati to Kelly Cup titles in 2008 and 2010.

In Maine, Rick Kowalsky returns to the ECHL has the new head coach for the Mariners. A 2017 inductee into the ECHL Hall of Fame, Kowalsky captained Trenton to the 2005 Kelly Cup title, and earned the John Brophy Award as ECHL Coach of the Year as Trenton’s head coach in 2008-09.

Matt Macdonald, who was head coach in Cincinnati from 2014-18, takes over the head role in Orlando after serving as an assistant coach in the American Hockey League with Grand Rapids and Bridgeport over the last seven seasons.

The new head coach in Rapid City is Dave Smith, who has spent the previous 20 seasons as a head coach in college hockey with Canisius College (2005-17) and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (2017-25).

Anthony Peters, who has been an assistant coach in Reading the past two seasons, takes over as head coach in Reading.

David Warskofsky gets his first head coaching opportunity in South Carolina, following in the footsteps of his brother, Ryan, who was Stingrays head coach from 2016-18, and enters his second season as head coach of the National Hockey League’s San Jose Sharks.

In Utah, John Becanic takes over as head coach after spending the last two seasons as head coach of the National Collegiate Development Conference’s Idaho Falls Spud Kings.

The new head coach in Wheeling is Ryan Papaioannou, who gets his first professional coaching job after going 907-217-48 in 1,172 career games as coach of the Alberta Junior Hockey League’s Brooks Bandits.

Approaching milestones

Adirondack’s Justin Taylor begins the season just 18 games shy of passing Michael Pelech for the most games played in ECHL history. Taylor, who is also ninth in ECHL history with 290 goals and tied for 14th with 571, needs 10 goals to become just the eighth player to reach 300 career goals and 29 points to become the ninth member of the 600-point club.

Allen’s Matt Register is ninth on the ECHL’s all-time games played with 683 while he ranks fourth all-time with 431 assists. With 17 games played, Register will become the seventh player in league history to appear in at last 700 games, and with 48 assists he will move into second place all-time.

Florida goaltender Cam Johnson enters the 2025-26 season with 17 career shutouts, which is eighth all-time. With five shutouts, he would move into third place on the all-time list. Johnson’s 118 career wins is 20th in ECHL history.

On the coaching front, Florida’s Brad Ralph, who is the league’s all-time leader with 105 career postseason wins, enters the season third all-time with 535 regular-season wins.

Allen’s Steve Martinon is right behind Ralph on the all-time wins list with 518.

Tulsa’s Rob Murray enters the season fourth all-time with 998 games coached and tied for fifth with 491 wins. Murray is nine victories away from becoming just the fifth coach in ECHL history to reach the 500-win plateau.
