Hogs Split Season Series with Admirals after 6-3 Loss

MILWAUKEE—The Rockford IceHogs couldn’t complete a comeback despite bringing the deficit within one goal three times and fell 6-3 to the Milwaukee Admirals on Saturday night at UW-Milwaukee Panther Arena. Jaxson Stauber suffered his first loss since January 26 and his 14-game unbeaten streak ended. Michal Teply posted two goals for the Hogs in his first multi-goal effort of the season.

The Admirals controlled the pace of play in the first period, taking a 2-0 lead and outshooting the IceHogs 15-7. Egor Afanasyev scored first for Milwaukee after tapping a shot from the left circle that deflected in off Jaxson Stauber’s leg to snag an early 1-0 lead (4:50).

Totaling 42 penalty minutes, the division rivals combined for 10 penalties halfway through the hard-hitting introductory frame.

Extending their lead to 2-0 before the first intermission, Fedor Svechkov caught Joakim Kemell’s centering pass from behind the net and blasted a one-timer from the low slot past Stauber’s gloveside (18:42).

Former Rockford forward Carson Gicewicz was charged with goaltender interference only 16 seconds into the second frame, and the IceHogs went on the power play. With just two seconds remaining on the man advantage, Milwaukee netminder Yaroslav Askarov made a pad save to deny Colton Dach’s shot from the left circle, and Michal Teply netted the loose puck from the low slot to cut the Admirals’ lead to 2-1 (2:13).

Milwaukee scored again to make it 3-1 after Jordan Gross tallied a wrist shot from the top of the right circle that deflected behind Stauber after he made a blocker save (7:58).

Teply scored his second goal of the night to bring the Admirals’ lead to 3-2 after he was cross-checked in the crease into Askarov, and Isaak Phillips’ shot from the right circle bounced off of a sprawled Teply into the net (16:41). After the play was reviewed for goaltender interference, it was ruled a goal and confirmed the 3-2 score at the end of the second period.

The Ads stretched their lead to 4-2 to start the final frame when Reid Schaefer swiped the rebound from Marc Del Gaizo’s shot behind Stauber from the right edge of the crease (2:50).

Cutting the score back to a 1-goal game just over two minutes later, Phillips buried a wrister from the left circle over the shoulder of Askarov to make it 4-3 (4:54).

Pulling ahead 5-3, Kevin Wall tipped in Jordan Gross’ shot from the high slot from the low slot (12:50).

The IceHogs pulled Stauber at 18:22 in favor of the extra man, but Afanasyev tallied his second goal of the contest with an empty-netter to seal the Admirals’ 6-3 win (19:54).

Stauber lost his first game since January 26 after marking 31 saves on 36 Milwaukee shots, and Askarov bagged the win after saving 20 of 23 Rockford attempts.

Wolves lose to Ads, 5-4 after penalties

MILWAUKEE—The Chicago Wolves wrapped up a four-game road trip by falling to the Admirals 5-4 in a shootout Friday night in Milwaukee.

Rocco Grimaldi had a goal and two assists, Max Comtois and Hudson Elynuik each added a goal and an assist and Cory Conacher also scored but the Wolves couldn’t hold off a Milwaukee rally. The Wolves did extend their points streak to four games with the shootout defeat to pull within eight points of idle Manitoba for the fifth and final Central Division postseason berth.

The Wolves struck first when Grimaldi scored just 4 minutes, 8 seconds into the opening period. The veteran forward attempted a pass that hit off a defender and bounced through the pads of Admirals goaltender Yaroslav Askarov. Ronan Seeley and Hudson Elynuik were awarded assists on Grimaldi’s team-leading 34th goal of the season.

Later in the first, Comtois extended the lead to 2-0 with the Wolves on the power play. Grimaldi found an open Comtois in front with a pass and the forward gathered the puck before beating Askarov to the stick side for his 18th goal of the season. Grimaldi and Cole Schneider had assists.

The Wolves kept coming and took a three-goal advantage into the first intermission after Conacher notched his eighth goal of the season in the waning moments of the period. The forward went to the net and buried a rebound off a Dominic Franco rush and shot. Franco had the lone assist on the play.

Milwaukee came out flying in the second and pulled into a 3-3 tie on scores by Tye Felhaber, Alex Campbell and Cal O’Reilly.

Early in the third, Elynuik put the Wolves out in front when the forward redirected a shot from Comtois past Askarov from in close. Assisting on Elynuik’s sixth goal of the season—and fourth in the last three games—were Comtois and Grimaldi.

Milwaukee knotted it at 4-4 on Ryan Ufko’s goal a short time later and won it in the fifth round of the shootout on Campbell’s score.

Keith Kinkaid (30 saves) suffered the loss in goal for the Wolves while Askarov (22 saves) earned the win for the Admirals.

With the loss, the Wolves fell to 22-32-6-7 while Milwaukee moved to 44-21-1-1.

Admirals Steal Victory from Stars Hands

CEDAR PARK, Texas – The Texas Stars, American Hockey League affiliate of the NHL’s Dallas Stars, suffered a 4-3 loss Saturday to the Milwaukee Admirals, who scored three goals in the third period to top to Stars in regulation at the H-E-B Center at Cedar Park.

Texas struck first 3:07 into the opening period when Matej Blumel fired home his 28th goal of the season and ninth on the power play. The winger snapped a shot from the top of the right circle through traffic and past Yaroslav Askarov early in the Stars’ first power play. The Admirals answered back during a 4-on-4 situation when Adam Wilsby sent a one-timer past Remi Poirier and into the net at the 12:02 mark. The teams skated even at 1-1 into the first intermission with Milwaukee outshooting Texas 11-5.

Just over six minutes into the second period, Alex Petrovic fired a wrist shot past Askarov’s glove to give the Stars a 2-1 lead, with Emilio Pettersen and Derrick Pouliot each picking up their second assist of the night. Texas then added an insurance goal in the final minute of the frame when Nick Caamano fed a cutting Kyle McDonald in front, as McDonald deflected the puck into the net with 25 seconds left.

Midway through the third period, Juuso Parssinen swept a loose puck out of a net-mouth scramble underneath Poirier to bring the Admirals back to within one and Jasper Weatherby tied the score 43 seconds later on a one-timer from low in the right circle. Tye Felhaber gave the Admirals their first lead to complete the comeback with 3:18 left as Milwaukee stunned Texas in regulation.

Poirier came down with the loss after stopping 33 of 37, while Askarov made 18 saves in the win for the Admirals. The Stars will have a second chance to clinch a Calder Cup Playoff spot Sunday with a Magic Number of one point.

Iowa stretch point streak to four in OT loss to Ads

DES MOINES, Iowa – The Iowa Wild earned a point for a fourth consecutive game in a 4-3 overtime loss to the Milwaukee Admirals at Wells Fargo Arena on Tuesday night. Turner Elson, Daemon Hunt, and Sammy Walker each recorded a goal and an assist for the Wild.

IOWA STRETCHES POINT STREAK TO FOUR IN 4-3 OVERTIME LOSS

Walker and the Wild took a 1-0 lead at 7:06 of the first period. After Elson chipped the puck to Will Butcher at the blue line, Butcher feathered a pass to the hash marks that Walker gathered and snapped past Yaroslav Askarov (30 saves).

The Admirals tied the contest 90 seconds later when Ozzy Wiesblatt chipped a rebound over Jesper Wallstedt (29 saves).

Milwaukee outshot Iowa 12-9 in the opening 20 minutes.

Iowa pulled ahead once again at 13:35 of the middle frame. With a delayed penalty to Milwaukee, Walker curled behind the Admirals net and found Hunt for a one-timer with a feed through the seam. Vladislav Firstov also picked up an assist on the goal.

The Wild stretched the advantage to 3-1 with 2:01 to play in the second on the power play. After Hunt sent the puck down the wall for Caedan Bankier, Bankier fired a shot pass to the slot that Elson tipped through Askarov.

Iowa outshot Milwaukee 11-8 in the second period.

The Admirals pulled within a goal 22 seconds into the third when Fedor Svechkov buried a one-timer off a feed from Joakim Kemell.

Svechkov tied the game with a power-play goal that banked in off an Iowa defender at 6:57.

Zach L’Heureux secured the extra point for Milwaukee at 2:19 of overtime with a wrister along the ice.

Each team finished with 33 shots. Iowa was 1-for-4 with the man advantage while Milwaukee went 1-for-3 on the power play.

Iowa travels to play the Texas Stars on Friday, Mar. 29 at H-E-B Center at Cedar Park.

Ads shut out Silver Knights, 3-0

L’Heureux opened the scoring at 15:38 in the first period with a shorthanded goal.

The Admirals then increased their lead to two with a goal from Weatherby, which snapped his eight-game point drought.

L’Heureux netted his second of the game with just under three minutes left in regulation after Henderson pulled Isaiah Saville for the extra skater.

The Silver Knights will return to the ice on Friday, March 29, for a home matchup with the Bakersfield Condors. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m. PT.

Silver Knights fall to Ads, 2-1, after penalties

The Henderson Silver Knights fell, 2-1, in the shootout to the Milwaukee Admirals on Saturday evening. Forward Grigori Denisneko potted the lone Silver Knights’ goal, his third in three straight games. IMG 5859

Goaltender Jiri Patera stopped 26 of 27 shots for a .962 save percentage on the evening.

The first period remained scoreless throughout.

Denisenko put the Knights on the board less than a minute into the second with his 17th goal of the season. After Brendan Brisson won the puck from an Admirals skater, he found Kaedan Korczak in the defensive zone. Korczak sent a bounce pass up to Denisenko in the neutral zone, and he buried the puck to give Henderson a 1-0 lead.

Tomasino tied the game for Milwaukee midway through the second period.

Askarov stopped all three Henderson shootout attempts, while Allison netted the lone shootout tally to give the Admirals a 2-1 victory.

The Henderson Silver Knights will return to the ice tomorrow, March 24, where they will take on the Admirals for the second game of their back-to-back. Puck drop is set for 1 p.m. PT.
