Devils into finals weekend

Dundee came out hard as they looked to overturn the two-goal aggregate deficit from the first leg, and peppered Ben Bowns’ net inside the opening five minutes. Jake Elmer let a shot go just wide while Ryan Valentini shot just over before Spencer Naas followed up on a rebound from a Valentini shot to put the Stars ahead on the night at 3:11, and just one behind on aggregate. The Devils steadied things and were level just short of three minutes later as Jamie Arniel lifted the puck over a sprawling Lucas Brine with 6:09 played. The following 13 minutes and change were more even than the opening phases that the Stars had controlled, but Bowns was mainly the reason why the teamed skated off all square at the break.

The Stars were restricted to fewer chances in period two, mostly coming on rushes up the ice. Justin Crandall almost put the Devils ahead in the final three minutes of the period but shot just wide. Crandall did put the Devils into the lead on the night when he finished a nice passing play at 39:21, while Bowns made a point-blank save as the clock ticked down to keep his side three ahead on aggregate. Earlier in the period, Sam Duggan threw himself in front of a Drydn Dow shot to prevent the Stars going ahead.

Arniel’s shorthanded tally 87 seconds into period three was the blow that probably put the tie beyond the Stars at an unfortunate time. The hosts battled to try and get themselves back into things, and did have a goal to cheer thanks to captain Dow with 1:46 to play.

However, it was the Devils’ weekend as they took the 3-2 win to advance 7-4 on aggregate.

Cardiff up by two after first leg

Both Cardiff Devils and Dundee Stars will go into the second leg of their Quarter-Final series believing they can make the Playoff Finals Weekend after the Devils took a 4-2 win in the first leg at a sold-out building in South Wales.

Dundee came closest to opening the scoring early with a shot coming back off the frame of Ben Bowns’ net as the visitors started well. A good save by Bowns at one end led to the Devils rushing down the ice and going ahead through Sam Duggan with 2:23 left in the opening period.

Ryan Valentini crashed a slap-shot past Bowns 54 seconds into period two to level the game, but the Devils hit back 33 seconds later on the rush with the returning Tyler Busch putting home a loose puck of his own pass. 6:16 into the period, Jake Elmer was left all alone in front of Ben Bowns to calmly deke and put the puck home and tie the game once again. Cardiff found themselves ahead at the break thanks to Bode Wilde’s shot through traffic with 6:47 left in the period.

Busch added his second of the night to put the Devils 4-2 ahead 100 seconds into the final period. Having seen over 200 penalty minutes in the three games between the teams at the Vindico Arena already this season, it was no surprise that the third was a feisty one. Lucas Brine, man of the match for the Stars, ended on 29 saves for the game, one more than Bowns, as both goalies made good saves to prevent further scoring.

The Stars will have to overturn a two-goal aggregate score if they’e to advance, while the Devils have that cushion heading into Sunday’s game back in Dundee.

Devils condemn Clan to last-place finish

Glasgow Clan failed to get the win they needed to keep themselves in with a chance of a playoff place, losing out 7-5 to Cardiff Devils at a sold-out Braehead Arena.

In truth, Clan’s fate was sealed after a disaster of a first period saw them three down to the second-placed Devils. Not two minutes were on the clock when Joey Martin tipped Jamie Arniel’s shot past Antti Karjalainen, while a bad rebound from the Finn saw Ryan Barrow’s shot land on the stick of Arniel to convert at the top of the crease with 13:31 gone. Under three minutes later, Cole Sanford neatly finished Trevor Cox’s feed in space to the Devils three ahead.

A long stretch pass from River Rymsha bounced off the back boards into the path of the on-rushing Chad Pietroniero to make it 4-0 14:32 into the middle period, but Darien Craighead got the board 14 seconds later. Sanford and Charlie Combs traded goals for a score of 5-2 in favour of the visitors through 40 minutes.

Matt Barry got Clan back to within two early in period three, only for Evan Mosey to put the Devils back three ahead just over a minute later. Jordan Cownie then pulled the score back to 6-4 with 13:14 to play, however a Mosey penalty shot with 9:16 left put the hosts three down and running out of time. Combs scored his second of the night at 51:47, and Clan battled until the end with Karjalainen pulled in the closing stages but to no avail.

The defeat, combined with results elsewhere, saw Clan slip to last in the stands on the final day of the season.

Martin hits hat trick in 500th game

Joey Martin was the star of the game as Cardiff Devils beat Dundee Stars 6-3 on Wednesday night at the Vindico Arena.

Playing in his 500th game for the Devils, the forwarded score three of the Devils’ six goals to get past Dundee.

A slick play from Jamie Arniel and Justin Crandall was finished off by Brandon Alderson with 5:01 played to give the hosts the lead, but they were pegged back by Jake Elmer’s equaliser just before the eight-minute mark. With 3:06 left in the first period, Martin finished from a Crandall feed on the powerplay to put the Devils back ahead.

Martin beat Brine from long-range to extend that to a 3-1 lead 9:33 into period two, but Dundee were back in it when Cody Donaghey’s hook awarded Chris McKay a penalty shot he dispatched at 38:16.

In a rare twist, the Stars were awarded another penalty shot for the another Donaghey hook 3:29 into the third, this time converted by Elmer to tie the game. McKay took a poor interference penalty with 11:11 left in regulation, and from there it started to unravel for the Stars. Trevor Cox netted on the powerplay only nine seconds later to put the Devils back ahead, with Chad Pietroniro slotting home in front at 49:37 to put them two ahead. Martin completed his hat trick with 9:12 to play, while the final 10 or so minutes of the game saw two fights to entertain the crowd further.

Devils lock in second with OT win

Cardiff Devils confirmed finishing second this season, and therefore Belfast third, with a 4-3 overtime win over the Giants on Sunday afternoon at the Vindico Arena.Cardiff Devils

It was a nervy start to the game for the Devils, who were put under good pressure from the Giants in the opening stages. Belfast were deservedly in front off a Sean Norris tip on a Josh Roach shot with 4:46 played to open the scoring, and it nearly got better for the visitors – a double-pad stick from Ben Bowns denying them their second. Staring the potential of not having scored for five straight period in the face, the Devils flipped the game in under two minutes. Evan Mosey tipped Bode Wild’s shot past Jackson Whistle at 16:34 to tie the game, while Riley Brandt put them ahead 95 seconds before the break.

The Devils finished off killing a 5-on-3 situation in the early part of period two, and as they returned to full strength the Giants were caught out with two guys behind them – Cole Sanford touched Mark Richardson’s pass into the path of Cody Donaghey to skate through and beat Whistle 94 seconds into the period. A furious Adam Keefe called his timeout immediately after the goal. A nice wrist shot from Greg Printz got the Giants back to within one at 26:25, and that’s where things stayed through to the end of the second.

Belfast were coming closer and closer to a tying goal as the Devils struggled to clear their own zone, and they finally got it through Ben Lake with 5:19 left to play.

Overtime followed, and despite chances at both ends it was a 2-on-1 for the Devils that led to the winner with Trevor Cox setting up Marcus Crawford to give the Devils the extra point at 63:02.

Cardiff top Panthers in crazy game

A very short-benched Nottingham Panthers produced an heroic performance but were beaten 7-6 by Cardiff Devils in Wales after penalty shots.24TH MARCH 2024: DEVILS 7-6 PANTHERS Top Image

Panthers were once again without Mike Caruso, Carl Neill, Logan Neilson and Jake Ryczek and lost defenceman Myles McGurty in the first period following a bad hit by Cardiff forward Chad Pietroniro.

On a night of outstanding moments. Otto Nieminen scored his second hat-trick in four matches while Alexander Lunsjö slotted back to play on defence following the injury to McGurty.

Lunsjö on target on powerplay but Devils in control
Cole Sanford put the hosts ahead after only 62 seconds going high-glove over Stojanovic (1:02) and Ben Davies made it 2-0 from the slot after good work by Pietroniro on the left boards (2:48).

Panthers had chances for Jordan Kelsall, Stephen Anderson and Lunsjö in quick succession, but Ryan Barrow scored Cardiff’s third on the rebound from close-range (15:54).

Pietroniro was thrown-out for boarding McGurty which saw Kelsall drop the gloves with the Devils forward and Panthers scored on the subsequent powerplay from Lunsjö’s shot through traffic (18:56).

Panthers hit back with three second-period goals
Lunsjö dropped back to defence to fill the gap left by McGurty, but Panthers didn’t let their short-benched woes trouble them as Félix Paré set-up Nieminen to sweep in Nottingham’s second goal of the five-minute powerplay (21:15).

Riley Brandt fed Sanford at the backdoor (23:06) for Cardiff’s fourth before Ollie Betteridge won the puck on the right boards, cut inside and fired over the shoulder of Ben Bowns for his first goal since returning from injury to make it a one-goal game (28:45)

Panthers equalised when Joe Hazeldine’s shot was saved and Anderson reacted first to get the puck to Nieminen who buried his second of the night (30:30) – a goal which saw Tyler Wall replace Bowns in the Cardiff goal.

Betteridge was denied by Wall on a short-handed breakaway and just after the Devils powerplay expired, Brandon Alderson scored Cardiff’s fifth from the left-circle (38:59).

Nieminen scores second hat-trick of season
Joey Martin hit the base of the right-hand post for the Devils before Stojanovic made a superb glove save to deny Brandt.

Mathieu Lemay breezed through the Cardiff defence but saw his shot saved by Wall, before Anderson converted a two-on-one short-handed break to equalise for the Panthers (48:20).

Nieminen completed his treble when he tipped-in Hazeldine’s shot on the powerplay to put Panthers ahead for the first time (52:01), but Cardiff hit back as Sanford fed Martin to equalise (55:43).

Devils take the extra point in the shootout
Panthers killed-off a penalty to Hazeldine in overtime and Stojanovic made an outstanding pad save to stop Jamie Arniel on the breakaway.

Lunsjö scored for the Panthers in the shootout and after the both sides netted once after the first five shots, Justin Crandall netted the winning penalty shot in sudden-death.
