Reece Vitelli ties the game late, scores shootout winning goal as Glads win, 4-3

The Gladiators struck first in the contest, with Jackson Pierson (13th) cashing in on the power-play. Luke Prokop sent the puck towards the goal from the right point, and after getting blocked in front, the puck went right to Pierson, who slid it in past Joe Murdaca. (2:57)

Just six seconds later, Matheson Iacopelli wired a shot glove side past Gustavs Davis Grigals, registering as goal number 17 on the season. (3:03)

With just over two seconds remaining in the period, Jacksonville scored again, with, this time, Christopher Brown scoring his 19th of the year. (19:58)

The two teams kept one another off the board in the second period, which was headlined by a series of sensational stops by Gladiator goaltender Gustavs Davis Grigals.

Come the final frame, the Icemen scored first, with Derek Lodermeier finding his 9th goal of the season at even strength. (5:57)

With Atlanta down two and on their second consecutive power play, Reece Vitelli, Micah Miller, and Robert Calisti teamed up on a beautiful passing play, with Calisti (9th) finishing it off. (10:20)

Still down a goal, this time on the penalty kill, Reece Vitelli (9th) would score a clutch shorthanded goal, tying the game at three. The 22-year-old forward caught Joe Murdaca off-guard with a speedy wrap-around that snuck its way past the goal line.

The game would go to the extra frame, where after seven minutes, the two teams remained deadlocked at three.

After both teams came up empty in the first round of the shutout, both Micah Miller and Matheson Iacopelli would score for their respective clubs.

With the shootout tied in a pivotal round three, Reece Vitelli, already with a goal and an assit in regulation, deked out Joe Murdaca, lifting the puck over his out stretched pad.

Gustavs Davis Grigals would snuff out Luc Brown’s last chance opportunity to tie the shootout, securing the win and the two points for Atlanta.

Gustavs Davis Grigals stopped 50 shots in the win for Atlanta, while Joe Murdaca, in his return to Gas South Arena, denied 31 of 34.

Stingrays Fall to Gladiators in Atlanta

Atlanta scored the game’s first three goals to jump out to the 3-0 lead. Jackson Pierson scored off the rush to make it 1-0, Micah Miller doubled the Atlanta lead with a rebound goal on the power play, and Michael Marchesan made it 3-0 when he knocked in a centering feed from Zach Yoder.

Jonny Evans got the Rays on the board with 14 seconds remaining in the first period when he fired a shot from the slot that trickled through Atlanta goaltender Josh Boyko. Kevin O’Neil pulled the Stingrays within one when he drove the net and slipped a backhand through the five-hole of Boyko. The Gladiators restored their three-goal lead thanks to a power play goal by Brendan Hoffmann and a goal off the rush by Michael Marchesan.

Following Marchesan’s second goal of the night, Stingrays Head Coach Brenden Kotyk called a timeout. Immediately after the timeout, Benton Maass scored off a one-timer from the right point. Austin Magera added a power-play goal before the end of the second period to pull the Stingrays within one.

South Carolina outshot Atlanta 9-5 in the final frame but couldn’t come up with the equalizer. They fell 5-4. The Stingrays are back in action in Greenville this Friday for a 7:05 pm tilt against the Swamp Rabbits.

Gladiators hand Solar Bears third loss in a week

Orlando, Fl. The Atlanta Gladiators (16-23-2-0) special teams scored two short-handed goals and added one on the power play as the team beat the Orlando Solar Bears (20-13-4-2) by a score of 3-2 Monday evening in Orlando, Florida. Atlanta opened the scoring while shorthanded to grab a 1-0 lead (3:04). Jackson Pierson pushed the puck past an Orlando Solar Bears defenseman and took off down the left side before feeding a wide open Cody Sylvester who netted his 13th goal of the season.

The Gladiators extended their lead to 2-0 early in the second period while on the powerplay (00:41). Luke Prokop blasted a one-time pass from Jackson Pierson into the Solar Bears net for his fourth of the season.

A beautiful short-handed effort from Robert Calisti gave Atlanta a 3-0 lead (6:08). Calisti picked off the Orlando power play on a bad zone entry and created a breakaway for himself which he capitalized on to score his seventh of the season.

The Solar Bears would make the game interesting late as Mitchell Hoelscher netted his 18th of the year to make the score 3-1 (18:21).

Orlando drew within one-goal just seventeen-seconds later to make it a 3-2 game as Hoelscher scored his second goal of the night (18:38).

A late push from the Solar Bears continued with their net empty but the Gladiators stood strong to seal the victory.

Josh Boyko made 38 saves to pick up the victory in his Atlanta Gladiators debut, meanwhile Evan Fitzpatrick allowed three goals on 21 shots in the loss for Orlando.

Gladiators roar past Lions

Trois-Rivières, QC. Atlanta wasted no time getting on the board as they scored an early goal for a 1-0 lead (00:24). Jackson Pierson wired home a shot for his eight goal of the season.

Trois-Rivières found the equalizer courtesy of Justin Ducharme to tie the game up 1-1 (8:04).

Just over three-minutes later the Gladiators scored to pull ahead 2-1 (11:51). Zach Yoder picked the pocket of a Lions defencemen and sent home his second goal of the season.

Once again Trois-Rivières responded to the Gladiators tally to tie things at two as Cedric Montminy found the back of the net for the Lions (11:51).

Atlanta scored midway through the second period to pull ahead 3-2 in the contest (10:50). Micah Miller picked up a loose puck and took a shot while spinning around for his 11th goal of the year.

The Lions would not go away as Nolan Yaremko tied the game for Trois-Rivières just over two-minutes later making it 3-3 (13:36).

The Gladiators took the lead for the fourth time in the game late in the third period to lead the Lions 4-3 (15:06). Jackson Pierson jumped on a loose puck in front of the Lions goal and scored his second goal of the night for Atlanta.

Miguël Tourigny responded for the no-quit Lions on the power play to once again tie the game, this time 4-4 (18:30).

With time winding down and offensive zone pressure Atlanta pulled ahead for one final time as they made the score 5-4 (19:20). Ryan Graves slapped a puck on net and it bounced off Micah Miller for his second goal of the night, giving the Gladiators the victory.

Brad Barone turned aside 38 of 42 shots he faced in the win for Atlanta, meanwhile Rylan Parenteau allowed five goals on 29 shots in the loss for Trois-Rivières.

Lions battle until the end but fall just short

The Lions and Atlanta Gladiators squared off for the first time this season at Colisée Vidéotron on Friday night. The Gladiators are currently last in the South division while the Lions occupy third spot in the North. Starting in goal for the Lions was Rylan Parenteau playing in his first game of the season, having been acquired Thursday afternoon from the Toledo Walleye for future considerations. The Gladiators opened the scoring early in the first period when Jackson Pierson scored just 24 seconds into the game. It took the Lions close to eight minutes to get on the scoreboard but Justin Ducharme was able to find the back of the net with assists going to Alex-Olivier Voyer and Matthew Boucher. Atlanta’s Zach Yolder regained the lead for the Gladiators with an unassisted marker at 11:51. And then Trois-Rivières’ Cedric Montminy tied the game at 2-2 less than two minutes after the Yolder goal.

Both teams potted a goal apiece in the second period, starting with Atlanta’s Micah Miller at 10:50 and then Nolan Yaremko at 13:36 for Trois-Rivières. The Lions dominated in the shots on goal department, outshooting the Gladiators 32 to 18 after 40 minutes of play. Atlanta’s netminder Barone had a hot hand and was able to keep the Lions at bay for the most part.

The game’s outcome was dictated in the final minutes of play in the third period: Atlanta’s Pierson scored his second of the night at 15:06 to give the Gladiators a 4-3 lead. The Lions’ Miguël Tourigny scored at 18:30 on the power play to bring the teams level at 4-4. But with only 40 seconds remaining in regulation time Micah Miller scored for Atlanta to give the Gladiators a 5-4 victory.

Swamp Rabbits fall to Gladiators, 5-3

GREENVILLE, S.C.  – Two late goals by the Atlanta Gladiators paved the way for a win, as the Greenville Swamp Rabbits fell 5-3 on Wednesday night at Bon Secours Wellness Arena.

Before either team could settle into the game, Greenville’s Tanner Eberle tipped Bobby Russell’s goal line feed into the net just 26 seconds in for the 1-0 lead. After a back-and-forth middle portion of the period, the Gladiators responded at 18:55, as Jackson Pierson tipped the tying goal into the Greenville net.

Out of the intermission, Greenville recaptured its advantage, as Jake Smith sniped his sixth of the season into the Atlanta net at 3:41. Again, Atlanta answered the Swamp Rabbits’ go-ahead goal, this time at 9:34 with Navrin Mutter’s second of the season. Less than a minute later, at 10:30, Atlanta’s Micah Miller stole the puck in the offensive end and scored his eight of the season for Atlanta’s first lead of the game.

In the third, Greenville answered Atlanta’s lead at 13:03, as Ethan Somoza scored an in-tight goal for his seventh of the season, tying the game at 3-3. Later in the period, at 16:42, Mitch Walinski scored his second of the season for a 4-3 Atlanta lead. Cody Sylvester solidified the 5-3 final with the empty-net goal at 18:53.

With the loss, the Swamp Rabbits remain atop the Eastern Conference but fall to 19-7-0-0, while the Gladiators improve to 10-14-0-0.

The Swamp Rabbits remain at Bon Secours Wellness Arena on Friday night, as they welcome the Orlando Solar Bears for the first time at 7 p.m.
