After falling short in a shootout the night before against the Barrie Colts, the Petes traveled down the 401 to take on their arch rival Oshawa Generals. It would be the first meeting between the two teams this season. Liam Sztuska would get his third start of the season, bringing a 1-1 record into the game.
Oshawa took advantage of the Petes short lineup early, controlling the game from the puck drop, but it would be the Petes who would strike first on the road. On Peterborough’s first shot of the game, Sam Mayer blasted a shot that was tipped in front by Quinton Pagé. The tip originally looked to be missing the net by a big margin, but would hit directly off of the Oshawa defenceman’s shin pad and right into the net to give the Petes the 1-0 lead. The goal would be credited to Pagé for his first of the season. Just over four minutes later, with Oshawa still controlling the game, former Pete Cam Butler would take back-to-back penalties to give Peterborough four minutes of power play time. With only one shot on goal in the period, Peterborough would capitalize seventeen seconds into the power play. Nick Lardis would attempt to throw a pass across ice to Sahil Panwar, but it would hit a body in front and go through the legs of Generals goalie Patrick Leaver to give the Petes a 2-0 lead. It would register as the Petes second shot of the period and would be Nick Lardis’ fifth straight game with a goal. The score would stay 2-0 heading into the first break.
The second period would see chances going both ways, but the Generals would be the ones to get on the board. Four minutes into the period, Brett Harrison would beat Liam Sztuska to cut the Petes lead to 2-1. Sztuska would stand tall for the rest of the period, denying multiple Generals scoring chances to keep the Petes lead intact. The period would end with a score of 2-1 Petes, with the Generals leading in shots 24-16.
Liam Sztuska would star for the Petes in the third period, turning away every Oshawa opportunity to secure his second career win. Sztuska would go on to stop 35/36, earning first star of the game. Connor Lockhart would extend his point streak to five games with an empty net goal to wrap it up for a final score of 3-1.
The Petes complete their three in three tomorrow in the Nation’s Capital when they take on the Ottawa 67s. Game time is 7PM, you can catch the game on YouTV and Freq 90.5.
