Fresh off of their second loss of the season to the North Bay Battalion the night before, the Peterborough Petes traveled to Sault Ste. Marie for their first meeting with the Greyhounds since 2020. Liam Sztuska would make his first start of the season, looking to get the Petes back into the win column.
The bus legs were certainly visible to start the first period, having traveled straight to Sault Ste. Marie from North Bay. That wasn’t the case for Liam Sztuska, who made multiple big saves in the period to keep the game scoreless. At the halfway mark, Justin DeZoete looked like he would get the Petes on the board, but he couldn’t get a stick on the puck to score what would have been his second in two games. The Petes had a couple other chances in the period, but couldn’t put the puck in the net, leading to a scoreless first.
The 2nd period began with chances going both ways, but the game would stay scoreless. That is until the 5:33 point of the frame when Jordan D’Intino beat Liam Sztuska on a wrist shot to give the Greyhounds the lead. That lead would only last for seven minutes, as J.R. Avon broke by the defence taking a breakaway pass from Justin DeZoete and finishing it to tie the game at 1-1. The two combined for their second goal in two nights, as Avon assisted on DeZoete’s goal in last night’s game. The game would stay 1-1 heading into the second intermission.
The third period would be scoreless until two minutes left in the game when Nick Lardis would throw a puck on net that would find it’s way through to give the Petes the 2-1 lead. Just 30 seconds later, Mark Duarte would score for the Greyhounds to tie the game and send it to OT. Just 2 minutes into OT J.R. Avon would score his second of the game to secure the win for the Petes.
Liam Sztuska was phenomenal in the Petes net, stopping 27 of 29 shots for his first career OHL win.
The Petes will wrap up their three game northern road trip on Sunday in Sudbury. They’ll take on the Wolves in an afternoon matinee starting at 2:05 PM. You can watch the game on YourTV Peterborough.
