Super Stingrays slay Giants

Rapid Solicitors Hull Stingrays produced an outstanding performance as they beat defending Elite League champions Belfast Giants 4-2 at the Odyssey Arena.

Goals from Jeff Mason (10.14) and Evan Cheverie (15.18) handed Giants a 2-0 lead at the end of the first period.

But a three-goal second period saw Stingrays hold the advantage courtesy of Will Frederick (27.17), Cory Tanaka (34.41) and player-coach Omar Pacha (35.16 powerplay). Hull Stingrays logo

Eric Galbraith added a short-handed strike at 44.37 to make it 4-2 as Stingrays secured back-to-back regulation wins over Giants for the first time since 2008.

Pacha said: “It was a massive win and a great team performance – our best game of the season. Every single guy bought in, they worked hard and competed for 60 minutes.

“We were delayed getting here but I thought we did OK in the first period but we stayed composed and created a lot of chances.

“This weekend I wanted us to get back to playing Stingrays hockey and playing to our strengths and we did that.”

Stingrays return home to face Braehead Clan tomorrow night (6pm face-off) and Pacha added: “We are halfway to making it a great weekend for us.

“If we produce the same effort and work-rate tomorrow then we have an excellent chance of making it a four-point weekend.”
