In Detroit, Malcolm Subban made 29 saves, and the Chicago Blackhawks blanked the Red Wings, 4-0, on Saturday.
“You cannot overstate what a great teammate Malcolm has been,” Blackhawks head coach Jeremy Colliton said. “There have been multiple occasions this season where he has stepped up and done a great job for us.”
It was SUbban’s second shutout of the season.
“It’s not easy when you are only playing once every few weeks, but I wanted to go out there and give our team a chance to win,” he said.
Detroit dropped to 16-24-6.
“In the first game of the series, they gave us some chances and we took advantage of them,” the Red Wings’ cDylan Larkin said. “Tonight, we were the ones making key mistakes.”
Patrick Kane had a goal and two points in the win.
Chicago climbed to within two points of the Nashville Predators for the fourth spot in the division.
“Obviously, we all know where we are in the standings,” Chicago’s Vincent Hinostroza (three assists) said. “To win a game like this, 4-0 where we battled the whole game, that’s great going into this series we’ve got with Nashville.
“These are the three biggest games of the year.”
Kane opened the scoring and Alex DeBrincat and Wyatt Kalynuk pushed the lead to 3-0.
“[Kane] is such a smart player that it is an honor to play with him,” Hinostroza said. “He’s so good with the puck that you are always working hard to use your speed and get open to make things happen.”
Pius Suter added an empty-net goal for the final score.
Jonathan Bernier made 23 saves in the loss, and kept his suit open for lack of support from Detroit.
“This was a game where our power play could have made a huge difference for us, and instead it made a difference in the other direction,” Detroit head coach Jeff Blashill said. “That’s what really let us down tonight.”
