Stone helps Sens skate past Kings, 2-1

In Ottawa Friday night, the Senators got a late goal form Mark Stone to edge the Los Angeles Kings, 2-1.

Stone scored with just six seconds left in regulation.

“We pressed really well in the third period,” Stone said. “We started to make little plays that kind of wore them down, where as in past games maybe we tried to make the big play right away.

“We opened up little things off the rush, and that led to zone time and really wore them down.”

The goal beat Peter Budaj who had been given the night off in favor of Jeff Zatkoff who left the game after the second period.

“Zatkoff pulled himself after the second period,” Kings head coach Darryl Sutter said. “I don’t know what it is.”

Dwight King  scored for the Kings when he Craig Anderson for a 1-0 lead.

Anderson had 32 saves for the win.

Budaj had 13 saves in the third period for the loss and Zatkoff had 8 through two periods.

“We played as good as we could. We were a little understaffed in the third period. We had chances. … You know they’re going to come hard in [the] third,” Sutter said. “They’ve got a lot of forwards who drive hard, and both the goals they scored we’ve got defensemen laying around the net. We lost a couple of battles there.”

Zack Smith also scored for the Sens to tie the game for Ottawa who improved to 9-5-0 on the season.

The Kings fell to 7-8-0.
