Rapid Solicitors Hull Stingrays produced a fantastic fightback to register a hugely-important two points as they beat Dundee Stars 4-3 after a shoot-out at Hull Arena in the Elite League.
Stingrays, playing their third game in as many nights, trailed 3-1 going into the final period before eventually ending a run of four successive shoot-out defeats.
Brad Plumton put Stars in front at 5.05 but Cory Tanaka – his 23rd marker of the season – tied it up for Stingrays 32 seconds later on the powerplay.
Two John Dolan goals (13.48 & 38.45) opened up a two-goal cushion for Stars but Will Frederick pulled a goal back for Stingrays at 49.09.
After Dolan missed a penalty shot at 56.47, Dominic Osman sent the game into overtime with a powerplay goal with 91 seconds remaining.
Carl Lauzon scored in the shoot-out to force sudden death, when Jordan Mayer was successful and goaltender David Brown – who made 39 saves in a man-of-the-match display – shut the door to secure the win.
It moved Stingrays two points clear of ninth-placed Edinburgh Capitals with two games in hand and player-coach Omar Pacha said: “That was a massive win.
“We did it the hard way but we found a way to win. We spoke at the end of the second period, we were frustrated but we just said ‘we have to win this game’.
“We got a big goal from Freddie and then Ozzy got a tip-in, they were not pretty goals but they were huge for us. It was also nice to finally win a shoot-out and get one for Browny, who had another solid game for us.
“Losing two games in 48 hours and then being down 3-1 going into the third period, we got a big response from the guys – they battled so hard. It was the biggest two points of the year and it is huge for our confidence. I am really proud of them.”
