NORTH CHARLESTON, SC – Forward Greg Stewart scored two goals and goaltender Daren Machesney recorded a 20-save shutout as the South Carolina Stingrays (1-0) defeated the Gwinnett Gladiators (0-1) 3-0 in Game One of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals Tuesday night at the North Charleston Coliseum. Stingrays lead the best-of-five series 1-0.
The Stingrays jumped on the board in the first period board behind a power-play goal from Stingrays defenseman Johann Kroll at 10:40 blasting a shot from the right-wing point past the blocker of Gladiators goaltender Marc Cheverie (L, 23 saves on 26 shots).
Forwards Maxime Lacroix and Pierre-Luc O’Brien earned assists.
Stewart put the Stingrays up 2-0 at 12:16 of the second period from rookie Michael Dorr . He completed the game scoring with an early third-period tally from O’Brien and defenseman Brett Flemming at 1:26.
The Stingrays finished the game 1-for-4 on the power play while the Gladiators went 0-for-2.
