Rapid Solicitors Hull Stingrays fell to their heaviest home defeat of the season as they were beaten 9-2 by Sheffield Steelers in the Elite League.
Two goals inside 53 seconds handed Steelers a 2-0 lead as Colton Fretter’s go-ahead strike (9.11) was followed by a Ben O’Connor effort (10.04).
Jordan Mayer pulled a goal back for Stingrays at 15.08 – his 26th goal of the season – but Mathieu Roy restored Steelers’ two-goal advantage 39 seconds later.
Sam Towner’s third senior tally cut the deficit for Stingrays again at 29.08 but a powerplay marker from Tyler Mosienko made it 4-2 at 34.02.
Five final-period goals from Jeff Legue (44.25), Mike Forney (45.17), Fretter (50.40 powerplay), Roy (55.21) and O’Connor (56.21 powerplay)Â ensured a clean sweep over Stingrays this season for Steelers.
Goaltender David Brown, who made 41 saves, was replaced by David Good after the ninth goal as Steelers outshot Stingrays 25-6 in the last 20 minutes.
Stingrays next welcome Dundee Stars to Hull Arena tomorrow night (6pm face-off) in what is a huge game in their battle for a play-off place.
Player-coach Omar Pacha said: “It is disappointing – a night to forget. I don’t mind losing but not like that.
“We knew it was going to be a challenging weekend but we have to go again tomorrow now for what is a massive game against Dundee.
“It is a really important game for us and one we simply have to win.”
