Stingrays go down in Dundee

Rapid Solicitors Hull Stingrays were unable to make it a four-point weekend in Scotland as they fell to a 6-1 defeat to Dundee Stars in the Elite League.

After a fantastic 3-1 victory at Fife Flyers on Saturday night, Stingrays missed a chance to move above them into seventh place.

But they remain four points clear of second-bottom Edinburgh Capitals, who visit Hull Arena on Tuesday (7pm face-off) in a crunch clash. Dundee Stars logo

Goals from James Isaacs (3.58) and John Dolan (5.20 & 11.49) prompted a Stingrays time-out, with Eric Galbraith pulling a goal back at 18.50.

Second-period markers from Igor Gongalsky (25.23 powerplay) and Kyle Gibbons (36.18) extended Stars’ advantage, with the former adding a sixth 28 seconds into the final session.

Player-coach Omar Pacha, making his 100th appearance for the club, said: “The team has been Jekyll and Hyde this weekend. One night we play the system to a tee and the other night we don’t show up for the first 12 minutes.

“We also lost Turcs [Yan Turcotte] in the first period so we only had four ‘D’ and eight forwards. We went down a couple of goals early and we had to chase the game and that is something you cannot do when you are playing short.

“But give Dundee credit, they did a great job. They sat back and waited for their chances and we played into their hands. We did not play our system and that is what happens.

“It is frustrating but now is not the time to get down on ourselves. We have to pick ourselves up and get ready for a massive game against Edinburgh on Tuesday.”
