Four final-period goals dented Rapid Solicitors Hull Stingrays’ hopes of a fantastic four-point weekend as they lost 4-1 to Elite League leaders Braehead Clan at Hull Arena.
Stingrays, who claimed a stunning win at Belfast Giants on Saturday night, led 1-0 going into the final session courtesy of Carl Lauzon’s redirected effort at 27.03.
Neil Trimm levelled at 44.09 and Scott Pitt put Clan ahead at 49.06 before Stefan Meyer’s powerplay strike at 56.11 stretched their advantage.
After Stingrays pulled goaltender David Brown for an extra skater, Pitt’s second gave Clan an insurance empty-net marker with 60 seconds remaining.
Player-coach Omar Pacha said: “It was a 2-1 game until a call at the end of the third period which I thought was questionable.
“For the first two periods we worked hard and we kept it really simple which is what we wanted. Then in the third we were forcing plays rather than chipping it out and keeping it simple.
“It is a game of small margins and against a team like Braehead you make any mistakes and they make you pay, they are the best in the league at doing that.
“If you asked me before the weekend would I be happy with two points, yes I would have been satisfied. But I know this team is capable of more.”
