Stingrays edged out in Belfast

Rapid Solicitors Hull Stingrays’ fightback proved just in vain as they were beaten 3-2 by Belfast Giants at the Odyssey Arena in the Elite League.

Mike Kompon (5.58) and David Phillips (17.41) saw Giants take a two-goal first-period lead before Ray Sawada extended their advantage on the powerplay 45 seconds into the middle session. Belfast

Assistant-player coach Carl Lauzon (28.20) pulled a goal back for Stingrays with a team-high 26th marker of the season.

He then added a second 7.38 into the final period with a short-handed strike but, despite pulling goaltender David Brown, Stingrays were unable to tie the game and force overtime.

Player-coach Omar Pacha said: “We competed hard and kept it tight but unfortunately we came out on the wrong side of it.

“We played really well in the second and third period, I thought we did OK in the first period but we made a couple of mistakes and they capitalised.

“We kept fighting and battled back with a big PK goal in the third. We created some chances after that and it could have gone either way.

“But you cannot get too high with the highs and too low with the lows. There were some positives to take into the Sheffield game tomorrow.

“We will look to build off those last two periods and hopefully get some points over the next two games.”
