Jordan Mayer gave Stingrays a flying start by scoring his 25th goal of the season after just 93 seconds. But Dennis Rix levelled for Capitals at 6.33 and a powerplay marker 2.26 into the second period from Riley Emmerson nudged the home side ahead.

Carl Lauzon, his 25th of the season, tied it up at 2-2 at 23.39 on the powerplay and just 52 seconds later Will Frederick restored Stingrays’ lead.

Rene Jarolin (36.16) made it a 3-3 game and Emmerson’s second powerplay strike with 66 seconds of the middle session remaining put Capitals back in front.

Frederick levelled 51 seconds into the final session and the game moved into a shoot-out with Rix earning Capitals the additional point.

Player-coach Omar Pacha said: “It has been a frustrating weekend. We produced a much better performance but we just could not find the win.

“I thought we played well enough to win it in regulation time, we showed up, we competed, the intensity was there and we created some chances.

“Our third period was our best of the weekend and we had a late chance on the powerplay. When it comes to a shoot-out it is a lottery. We had trouble last season in the shoot-out and we can’t seem to buy one this year.

“One point this weekend was not our goal but we just have to move on now and focus on another big weekend. We have 12 games left, it isn’t going to be easy but we just have to take it one game at a time.”
