Stingrays claim big home win

Jordan Mayer netted the game-winning-goal with just 46 seconds left as Rapid Solicitors Hull Stingrays beat Fife Flyers 5-4 at Hull Arena in the Elite League.

A first-period brace from Carl Lauzon handed Stingrays a 2-0 lead, getting the go-ahead goal short-handed at 5.57 before hitting his second at 16.14.Hull Stingrays logo

But a bullet from Ned Lukaceviuc on the powerplay at 24.22 was followed by markers from Niko Suoraniemi (30.15) and Jamie Milam (33.44) which ensured a three-goal period from Flyers and saw them lead 3-2.

A powerplay marker from Will Frederick at 49.24 made it 3-3 only for Matt Reber (52.49 powerplay) to put Flyers back in front. However, Eric Galbraith tied it up again at 56.08 before Mayer struck in the final minute.

Galbraith and Jordan Fulton [Flyers] received 5+game misconducts after clashing with one second left.

The win means Stingrays are now .500 for the season and have taken eight points from their last five games in which they have not been beaten in regulation time.

Player-coach Omar Pacha said: “It was a huge two points. I don’t think we played our best hockey and we were lucky to get two points but it puts us two points closer to them with games in hand.

“The second period was bad but to be fair to them they came out flying and were dominating us but we regrouped, we had a good conversation between the break and we kept it positive. We knew this game was massive and luckily for us we got the two points.

“In the last 14 games we know we need to play better but give credit to Fife, they played well but we know we can do a lot better. We stole one from them to be honest. But we just had to find a way to win and we did that so we will move on to next week now.”
