DULUTH, GA – The South Carolina Stingrays (35-18-1-6) tied the longest winning streak in ECHL history Friday night with their 17th victory in a row behind a 4-0 shutout over the Gwinnett Gladiators (17-37-3-2) at The Arena at Gwinnett Center. The win set a new ECHL record for most consecutive road wins (11) originally set by the Stingrays back in 2000.
The Stingrays kicked off the scoring 9:25 into the first period when forward Joe Devin caught a pass from defenseman Drew MacKenzie and lifted a backhanded drive over the blocker of Gladiators netminder Mike Lee (L, 35 saves on 39 shots).
Forward Wayne Simpson gave the Stingrays a 2-0 lead at 7:39 of the middle stanza redirecting a feed from forward Andrew Rowe between the legs of Lee. MacKenzie added the second assist. Forward Caleb Herbert sent the Stingrays into the intermission with a three-goal advantage with his 17th goal of the season at 14:26 from forward Patrick Gaul and defenseman Wade Epp.
In the third period, the Stingrays sealed the victory as forward Rob Ricci knocked a rebound past Lee at 16:37 with help from defenseman Marcus Perrier. Stingrays goaltender Jeff Jakaitis (W, 19 saves on 19 shots) earned his fourth shutout of the season, tying the ECHL season-high. Both teams finished the game 0-for-4 on the power play.
