Stillman Scores Two, Petes Fall to Red Hot Knights in London

Still in search of their first win in the month of December, the Petes traveled to London for a Saturday night battle with the Knights. Desperate to end their four game losing streak, the Petes would go into the game without two of their top three scorers with Brennan Othmann at Canada’s World Junior Camp and Connor Lockhart suspended. The Petes have won the last three meetings between the two teams, with the most recent being in December of 2019. There was no shortage of storylines for this one, with London native Michael Simpson starting in his hometown for the first time in the OHL, and brothers Sam and Max McCue matching up against each other for the first time.

The first period started out tough for the Petes, with London opening the scoring just six minutes in. The Petes would catch a break two minutes later and go on the powerplay. On the powerplay, Chase Stillman tipped home a James Guo shot to tie the game at 1-1. In what would be a wild final 18 seconds of the period, the Knights took the lead after a giveaway behind the Petes net. Not to be outdone, Chase Stillman scored his second of the game and third in his last two games with only 1.8 seconds on the clock to tie the game up heading into the break. The Petes outshot the Knights 17-8 in the first 20 minutes.

The second period would see multiple scoring chances going both ways, with both goalies standing tall to keep the game tied. The tie would be broken at the 13:55 mark when Landon Sim beat Michael Simpson to give the Knights the lead once again. The score would stay 3-2 heading into the second intermission with London taking over the shot lead 24-23.

The Petes would be in control to begin the third period, not allowing the Knights to register a shot until the 10:48 mark. Unfortunately for the Petes, London’s first shot of the period would result in a goal to extend London’s lead to 4-2. Frustrations continued for the Petes, who just seem to not be getting any bounces as of late, as London would score an empty net goal to take the game 5-2.

Chase Stillman led the way for the Petes, scoring their only two goals. James Guo, Sahil Panwar, Donovan McCoy, and Jonathan Melee all had an assist. Michael Simpson stopped 26/30 in his homecoming game.

The Petes next game is tomorrow afternoon when they head to Sarnia to take on the Sting. Puck drop is scheduled for 2:00 PM. You can catch the game on YourTV Peterborough and Freq 90.5.
